Shawn wants Mayweather to fight winner of Thurman-Porter

By Allan Fox: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter is hoping that the winner of his fight this Saturday night against WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman will lead to Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming out of retirement to fight one of them. Thurman and Porter will be fighting at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Their fight will be televised on CBS. A lot of casual boxing fans are expected to see the fight, and for many of them, it will be the first time they’ve seen them. It’s going to be a great opportunity for both fighters to display their talent to many new fans of the sport.

The Thurman-Porter fight will be televised on CBS with a start time at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

The winner of the Thurman vs. Porter can call themselves the number one fighter in the welterweight division if they want to, but they clearly won’t be. Whether they’re perceived as the best by the casual boxing fans will be determined essentially on them being ignorant of the other welterweight contenders and champions out there that the winner of the Porter-Thurman would still need to fight before they’re seen as the top fighter.

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) says he wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s fight between WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-1-1-1, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Porter vs. Thurman fight will be televised on Showtime Boxing.

Brook thinks Porter will defeat Thurman on Saturday. Brook says he would then like to take on Porter in a rematch. However, Brook still has a fight scheduled on September 3 against WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, KOs) that he needs to win first before he can start thinking of another unification match. Brook says he would also like to fight WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia as well.

After only one year after the highest grossing fight of all time between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao the division has completely transformed with those two retiring, a new set of champions and a fresh batch of competitors.

With the heavyweight division gaining excitement after arguably two decades of decay and a solid cruiserweight division it is up to the new batch of fighters to restore welterweight glory and crown a new king.

This piece assesses the current situation, the top contenders and their willingness to fight each other as well as provide predictions as to the new dominant force. The auditions start next week with Keith Thurman facing Shawn Porter.

Malignaggi analyzes Thurman vs. Porter

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi sees this Saturday’s fight between WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time’ Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) as a weeding out process between two of the top five fighters in the 147lb division. Thurman will be defending his WBA 147lb title at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. the fight will be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing.

Malignaggi doesn’t necessarily believe that Porter and Thurman are the top two fighters at welterweight. They still need to prove themselves against each other and the other remaining three top welterweights, which Malignaggi didn’t name.

It’s likely that Malignaggi sees Errol Spence, Danny Garcia and Kell Brook as the three other guys. You could possibly substitute one or those names with Tim Bradley, David Avanesyan, Jessie Vargas and Andre Berto. Those are all quality fighters that could potentially take the No.1 spot, although it’s not likely.

By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) is doing a lot of talking during the build up to his title defense this Saturday night on June 25 against challenge Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) on Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Thurman making comments that don’t seem logical. He’s talking about wanting to use nonstop movement for 12 rounds to keep Porter from landing any blows in the fight, but at the same time, he’s saying he’s going to stand toe-to-toe and fight. However, in the next breath, Thurman says he’s going to go toe-to-toe while backing up and going side to side. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think it’s physically possible to go toe-to-toe while backing up or going side to side for 12 rounds unless you have big feet.

“I’m always changing gears. Sometimes changing gears can be subtle as to change an angle,” said Thurman to Fighthype.com. “I’m going to test Shawn from each and every angle. We’re going to go toe-to-toe. I’m going to be moving straight back. We’re going to go toe-to-toe and side to side, and we’re going to see how that effects Shawn. When we have Shawn on his back foot, we’re going to see how he enjoys being pressured. The 1st speed is the fastest of all gears, and sometimes I’ve noticed the eagerness to want to fight.”

It’s not enough for the winner of this fight just to get the victory.

They’re going to need to look good in winning. That means if Thurman wins, he can’t be running around the ring for 12 rounds, stinking up the joint with his terrible to watch “circle fighting.” Thurman calls his fighting style, “Circle fight.” I think a lot of boxing fans would call it “boring style,” so hopefully Thurman can stand in the pocket and actually fight on Saturday instead of running from Porter, 28, for 12 rounds.

Kenny sees Porter beating the 27-year-old Thurman on the inside and outside in this fight. Kenny believes that Shawn is the faster, stronger and the guy with the better game plan in this fight. We’re going to find out if Kenny is right or not when the two talented 147lb fighters get inside the ring on 6/25.

Thurman will be using Kell Brook’s game plan against Porter

By Allan Fox: The boxing public have been waiting for many months to see the Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) vs. Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), because they believe the fight will be an exciting bout from start to finish with a lot of exciting. However, Thurman is saying he plans to use the same game plan that Kell Brook used to defeat Porter two years ago in their fight in 2014.

Brook used a great deal of clinching to keep Porter from being able to throw his punches. WBA welterweight champion Thurman will be defending his title against Porter on June 25 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman says he doesn’t intend on being stationary against Porter in this fight, because he doesn’t want to give him a chance to land his punches. So instead of staying in the pocket, Thurman will be circling the ring constantly.

Keith Thurman wants Canelo fight

By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) says he would like to fight former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs), because he sees him as a guy that is a big cash cow in the sport. Thurman didn’t mention Gennady Golovkin as someone he would like to fight when he moves up in weight.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya recently said that Golovkin wasn’t as talented as Thurman because he couldn’t fight going backwards. If Thurman is more talented than Golovkin, then this would be a good opportunity for Thurman to prove it if Golovkin is still around when Thurman does eventually move up in weight.

For Thurman to get a fight against Canelo, he will likely need to become a huge name in his own right, and he’ll also need to be a little more stationary.
