Errol Spence: I can beat Keith Thurman

spence33

By Allan Fox: Undefeated welterweight contender Errol Spence (21-0, 18 KOs) is confident that he can beat WBA 147lb champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) when the two fighters eventually face each other in the future. It’s unclear when Spence and Thurman will face each other though.

Spence recently defeated Leonard Bundu by a 6th round last August in their International Boxing Federation title eliminator bout to pick out a mandatory challenger to IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook, who recently moved up to 160 to face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in a unsuccessful title challenge. Brook isn’t sure yet whether he’ll move back down to 147 or not.

Spence’s trainer: Thurman’s face was beat up after Bundu fight

spence890

By Allan Fox: Derrick James, the trainer for unbeaten #2 IBF welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr (21-0, 18 KOs), says that Keith “One Time” Thurman’s face was beaten up and swollen after his fight against Leonard Bundu (33-2-2, 12 KOs) in December 2014. In contrast, Spence got out of the fight with Bundu without any swelling in his 6th round knockout win last Sunday night in their IBF welterweight title eliminator bout at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman knocked Bundu down in round one of their fight two years ago and went on to win a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 120-107. However, Thurman looked uncomfortable and stressed out from the pressure that Bundu was putting on him in the fight. Bundu was landing solid shots to the head of Thurman in every round that forced him to move all night long.

Errol Spence: Bundu is a range finder for me

Image: Errol Spence: Bundu is a range finder for me

By Dan Ambrose: Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) will be looking to try and do what Keith Thurman couldn’t do by beating Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) today and looking impressive in doing so in their fight at Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman beat Bundu by a 12 round decision in 2014, but he didn’t look all that sharp. Bundu had his moments against Thurman early in the fight, and he forced him to into a hit and move style. The result was Thurman turning the fight into a boring affair that caused the boxing fans at ringside to boo him. They weren’t booing Bundu, because he was trying to pressure Thurman, but he couldn’t catch up to him.

The 10 best welterweights ranked

Image: The 10 best welterweights ranked

By Dan Ambrose: There’s a lot of confusion among boxing fans in who are the very best welterweights in the division right. The ratings that we see from the four sanctioning bodies and Ring Magazine almost appear to some fans be senseless without reason. For example, Ring Magazine has Kell Brook rated No.1, and that’s not someone that the average boxing fans would agree as being good enough to deserve that rating.

This is why I’ve decided to make my own list, which I personally feel is a lot better than the sanctioning bodies and Ring Magazine’s bizarre rankings systems. It’s nice to remove politics from the ranking systems and just go with who the actual best fighters are. That’s why I feel that my list of welterweights is far better than we could ever hope to get from the alphabet sanctioning bodies or Ring Magazine.

Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia possible for early 2017

Keith Thurman

By Eric Baldwin: Showtime vice president of sports Stephen Espinoza is hoping to put together a unification fight between unbeaten welterweight champions Danny Garcia and Keith “One Time’ Thurman for early 2017. Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) and Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) are both reportedly on board for the fight, according to Ring TV.

Thurman, 27, may have to defend his WBA welterweight title against his #1 WBA mandatory challenger David Avanesyan before he can meet up with Garcia. The World Boxing Association has already ordered negotiations to take place between Thurman and Avanesyan.

Thurman, Crawford, Vargas, Garcia and Brook have it tough

Keith Thurman

By Jaime Ortega: Unlike the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao age, this generation of welterweights presents a wider diversity of boxing styles. Whomever comes on top in this era should rank higher than Floyd and Pacquiao’s legacy given the adversity and challenges he or them will have to overcome. We could end up with several different legends in this era and not just one.

The amount of undefeated boxers in the welterweight division is very high, and new prospects are ferociously coming to the scene to dominate and take all the belts. No welterweight will retire undefeated and boxing fans will probably witness many trilogies. If Floyd or Pacquiao fought in this era, I am convinced their boxing records would look different than what it looks today given the pool of talent lurking the welterweight division.

Arum: “Thurman if you want to fight Pacquiao, tell that to Al

arum12345

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum appeared to lose his cool on Thursday when asked during an interview whether he would be interested in matching his fighter Manny Pacquiao with WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman. Arum said that if Thurman is truly interested in fighting Pacquiao, then he needs to contact his manager Al Haymon and have him contact him to see if they can make the fight. Arum then said that the interviewer Marcos Villegas of Fighthub was being used by people.

It’s unclear why Villegas would be used by Thurman when it comes to him telling that he would like to fight Pacquiao. That seems like Thurman speaking the truth, doesn’t it?

Keith Thurman calls out Pacquiao

Image: Keith Thurman calls out Pacquiao

By Chris Williams: In a clear sign that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is focused on matching his fighter Manny Pacquiao with one of his own Top Rank stable guys for his next fight on November 5, unbeaten WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) has called Pacquiao out for his next fight, but there doesn’t appear to be any interest in him as an opponent. Thurman is the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin of the welterweight division in my view. Having Pacquiao fight Thurman is a MUCH bigger fight than throwing the Filipino fighter in with the rail thin Terence Crawford or Viktor Postol. Having Pacquiao fight Postol or Crawford is pretty much another Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 3 time of fight.

There apparently is no interest in having Thurman as Pacquiao’s next opponent, which is sad because I think Thurman would be a great opponent for Pacquiao. Arum is interested in matching Pacquiao against one of his Top Rank fighters: Terence Crawford, Jessie Vargas or Viktor Postol.

Keith Thurman vs. Kell Brook, who wins?

brook43

By Jaime Ortega: The welterweight division is packed with talent and undefeated champions. One of them is IBF champion of the world, Kell Brook, an undefeated boxer who many believe will conquer the welterweight division. Others believe that Brook is another English hype job created by his promoter.

Brook has been under a lot pressure from his fans to fight legit opponents. The criticism originated after his fight with Shawn Porter, he started to select easy fights to boost his undefeated record and build up his legacy. His fights with Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier earned him a bad reputation among his fan base for picking weak one-dimensional boxers – unknown Europeans!

Mikey Garcia says Thurman vs. Porter could have been scored a draw

Thurman vs Porter

By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Mikey Garcia says he thinks last months’ exciting welterweight clash between WBA champion Keith “One Time” Thurman and Shawn Porter was so close that it could have been scored a draw.

Thurman won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113. The general consensus from the boxing fans is that Thurman did just enough to squeak out a narrow victory. However, there were a great many fans that felt the fight could have been scored a draw. This writer had Porter winning six rounds.
