Dan Rafael of ESPN, quotes Roach as saying “He [Chavez Jr.] has good skills, has a nice pop on his punch and does everything I ask for in the ring. I am working with him to sit down on his punches, not move so much while throwing.” Chavez, 24, is what you would call a diamond in the rough.

This will be the first time in Chavez’s career that he’ll have fought a 1st tier fighter, albeit a fringe one. Up to this time, the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. has been the king of the B level opposition, beating all but one of them during his seven year pro career.

Chavez Jr. is ranked #1 by the WBC: Does he deserve that ranking?

By Jim Dower: As I was looking over the rankings, I noticed that light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is ranked at number #1 by the WBC for the light middleweight division. I know that having an unbeaten record helps in ranking, but I don’t quite understand how the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. could be ranked above more established fighters in the division like Antonio Margarito and Kermit Cintron.

By Jim Dower: Undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be flying to Los Angeles on Tuesday to begin training with Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym for preparation for the 24-year-old Chavez’s June 26th fight against middleweight contender John Duddy (29-1, 18 KO’s) at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas. According to the Record, Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank convinced Chavez Jr., the son of famous boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, to start training with Roach in the United States.

Incredibly, the Chavez Jr. vs. Duddy bout will be the main even in the Pay-per-View Latin Fury 16 card. It’s hard to imagine this fight as being a main event, and even harder to imagine having to pay to see it. To be sure, Duddy and Chavez Jr. are both entertaining fighters in their own way, showing some decent skills.

Image: Chavez Jr. suspended seven months, could face Duddy in June – NewsBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0, 30 KO’s) was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday as a result of a post fight urine check after his last fight in November against Troy Rowland. Chavez, 24, tested positive for a diuretic drug called Furosemide, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Commission then after meeting with Chavez, promptly gave him a seven month suspension. It’s unclear why Chavez would take the drug, as it’s used for either cutting weight or masking steroid use.
