By Jim Dower: In a pleasant surprise on a bad night for boxing on HBO PPV, the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs)fight was announced last Saturday night following Canelo’s one-sided 12 round unanimous decision victory over weigh drained Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (5-3-1, 32 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golovkin, 5’10 ½”, stepped inside the ring moments after the lopsided scores were given by the judges for the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight.

No sooner did boxing’s biggest star Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) dispatch Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (50-3-1, 32 KOs) in a dominant shutout victory over 12 rounds at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena on presented live on HBO Pay-Per-View, than the middleweight superstar announced that boxing’s biggest fight – a showdown with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) – would take place on Mexican Independence Day weekend on September 16. Canelo beat Chavez, Jr. from pillar to post, earning a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight 120-108.

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) defeated former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-3-1, 32 KOs) in an incredibly poor fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final scores were 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108. Boxing News 24 scored it 120-108 in favor of Canelo. After the fight, middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin came into the ring, and they announced that he’ll be fighting Canelo in September.

Roach isn’t sure if Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants to take the risk yet of having his “cash cow” Canelo beaten by GGG, so he’s not sure if we’ll see the Canelo-Golovkin fight yet.
Roach thinks that the 35-year-old Golovkin has slipped a bit recently with his last 2 fights against Daniel Jacobs and Kell Brook, both of which he still beat.

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. both weighed in successfully at 164 pounds on Friday for their 164.5 pound catch-weight fight this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo looked pretty stocky and almost at his fighting weight in coming at 164. The added 9 lbs. that he put on over his normal self-created 155 pound catchweight class seemed to suit him well.
