Marquez: Brook has chance against Golovkin

BOXING

By Scott Gilfoid: Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez sees British welterweight Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) as having a chance to pull off an upset this Saturday night on September 10 against IBF/IBO/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in their fight at the O2 Arena in London, England.

According to Marquez, he thinks Brook is a much better technical fighter than Golovkin, and he thinks that could be an area where he takes advantage. However, Marquez notes that Golovkin has the much more powerful punch than the 30-year-old Brook, and he sees that as an area where he could have issues in this fight.

Miguel Cotto vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight won’t be happening

cotto931111

By Dan Ambrose: Unfortunately for 35-year-old former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), he was unable to negotiate a fight against the soon to be 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) for a fight that would have taken place in December. The two fighters couldn’t agree on the weight for the fight. Cotto will now move on and look for someone else to fight.

Marquez wanted to fight at 147, but Cotto wasn’t able to do that weight, according to Dan Rafael. Cotto wanted 150lbs for a catch-weight.

Marquez: Golovkin is a tough fight for Brook

golovkin4

By Scott Gilfoid: Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez sees Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) as having a tough time with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in their fight on September 10. Marquez thinks that Golovkin’s superior size and punching power will make it hard for Brook to endure 12 rounds against him. Marquez notes that Brook has an elusive style of fighting, but he’s not sure that he’ll be able to handle the power from Golovkin.

Brook, 30, will be moving up in weight from the welterweight division to take on Golovkin at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Brook won’t have it as bad compared to a true welterweight, because he’s really more of a junior middleweight that melts down to fight lighter guys at welterweight.

Having a weight advantage against the welterweights has helped Brook find success in his career. In the case of the Golovkin fight, the junior middleweight-sized Brook will need to move up in weight one division to take him on.

It’s going to be very tough on Brook, because even if he was in the same weight class as Golovkin, he would still not have the same punching power or boxing skills as him.

Marquez still wants Cotto at 147

marquez44444

By Dan Ambrose: If Miguel Cotto wants the fight against 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) this year, then he’s going to need to lose some water weight and/or muscle to get down to 147, because that’s the highest the Mexican warrior is willing to go. Marquez does not want to fight Cotto above 147, and it makes sense because he’s not nearly as heavy as the Puerto Rican star.

Marquez has an advantage in getting his way, because Cotto doesn’t have many options. He can either find a way to melt down to 147, or he can bite the bullet and fight one of the quality contenders or champions at 154.

It doesn’t look like Cotto wants to do that. He would have a very hard time if he had to fight the likes of the Charlo brothers, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout or Julian Williams. Cotto should have taken what many fans see as the weak link among the champions at 154 by taking on WBO belt holder Liam Smith.

Marquez doesn’t want Cotto fight at 150lbs

marquez7776676

By Dan Ambrose: Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) and former four-division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) are negotiating on a catch-weight for a fight between them. Marquez does not wish to fight Cotto at a catch-weight of 150 pounds, because he sees that as a lot of weight for him. It seems that if the Cotto-Marquez fight is going to take place, it will need to happen at 147.

Marquez spent much of his career at featherweight, and didn’t move up to welterweight until he’d reached his 20th year as a pro. The highest weight that Marquez has weighed in for a fight during his career was 144 ½ pounds for his fight against Tim Bradley in October 2013.

“He [Cotto] was talking about a fight at 150 pounds, but that’s a lot of weight. We are analyzing and seeing what’s more appropriate. If not, then we’ll probably retire,” said Marquez to espndeportes.com. “It’s not an obsession [to fight Cotto]. We want to make one last fight to give a good show to the people, but if we cannot then we’ll see what’s the best decision.”

Cotto’s best options for next fight

Image: Cotto’s best options for next fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) still hasn’t scheduled a fight this year. The 35-year-old Cotto’s last fight was against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last November. Cotto lost that fight by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on HBO pay-per-view.

The fight was a lot closer than the scores handed down by the judges. Cotto’s best options for his next fight are a rematch with Canelo or a fight against 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez. However, it’s still unclear whether Cotto will fight at all in 2016. It would be in Cotto’s best interest to fight this year if he wants to stay sharp, but it’s unclear whether he will or not.

Jessie Vargas wants Cotto, Marquez and Danny Garcia

1-AliVargas3_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) is hoping to use his new WBO title victory over Sadam Ali to get a big name to fight him for his next fight. The 26-year-old Vargas specifically wants to fight Tim Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia or Juan Manuel Marquez. Vargas feels that if he beats someone like the 42-year-old Mexican warrior Marquez, he’ll become the new dog in town.

Marquez, Cotto, Garcia and Bradley would be doing Vargas a huge favor if they agreed to fight him. There’s no real upside for any of them to fight Vargas because he’s not a big name despite some of his fights being televised on HBO.

Arum wants Jessie Vargas vs. Juan Manuel Marquez

marquez6By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching 42-year-old former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) against his new WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs).

Arum is trying to turn the 26-year-old Vargas into a star. Marquez has wanted to capture a welterweight title for some time, and has failed in his two attempts at winning the title. Marquez was arguably robbed in his fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2011, and then beaten by Tim Bradley in 2013 in his second attempt to win a 147lb title.

Arum wants to match Vargas against the winner of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley fight. However, Pacquiao plans on retiring after his April 9 fight with Bradley, so that leaves only Bradley for Vargas.

Arum interested in matching Marquez against Crawford

arum33By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum failed to match his aging star Manny Pacquiao against WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford in order to have Pacquiao be a stepping stone for Crawford to turn him into a star.

It’s unclear if it was Pacquiao who turned down Crawford or if Arum decided he didn’t want to throw Pacquiao to the young lion with him coming off of a shoulder injury and a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his last fight. Arum is now interested in having the soon to be 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) face Crawford later on this year if Marquez’s injured knee holds up in his tune-up fight in the summer.

Arum wants to make sure Marquez’s knee is fine before scheduling fight for him

marquez45By Dan Ambrose: 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) wants to return to the ring this summer for a tune-up fight to get ready for a possible bout against Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) for the end of the year.

Marquez’s injured right knee is 90 percent healed, according to ESPN. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants to make sure that Marquez’s knee is healthy enough for him to fight. Marquez has been out of the ring for almost two years now because of a knee problem that he suffered in May of 2014 in his fight against Mike Alvarado. It’s unknown why Marquez didn’t have surgery on his knee to repair the problem.

“Marquez says his knee is about 90 percent, so we will see how it is for sure before we make any fight for him,” Arum said via ESPN.com.
