Angulo vs. Julio: Alfredo wants to “take his [Joel] head off” on Saturday

Image: Angulo vs. Julio: Alfredo wants to "take his [Joel] head off" on SaturdayBy Jim Dower: On Saturday night, WBO light middleweight champion Alfredo Angulo (17-1, 14 KO’s) wants to continue with his recent bit of success by hopefully stopping Joel Julio (35-3, 31 KO’s) as quick as possible when they meet at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California. Angulo, 27, has won two consecutive fights since being beaten by Kermit Cintron by a 12 round decision loss last year in May.

Angulo reportedly wasn’t feeling at his best before the Cintron fight and looked like it, appearing slow and getting beaten to the punch all night long. Angulo has turned things around since then, winning the World Boxing Organization interim light middleweight title in his last fight, a 3rd round TKO win over Harry Joe Yorgey in November.

Dzinziruk Defeats Julio – Latest Boxing News

dzinziruk332.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (36-0, 22 KOs) easily defeated Colombian knockout artist Joel Julio (34-2, 31 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Koenig Pilsener Arena, in Oberhausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Dzinziruk, 32, had too much skill for the slower, more limited Julio, whom he jabbed at will open Saturday night making the Colombian look like a rank amateur. Julio, 23, had his moments in the earlier rounds in which he was able an occasional power shot against Dzinziruk, but for the most part, Julio was picked off while coming in by Dzinziruk’s hard jabs to the head.

In many ways, the fight was a repeat of Julio’s 12-round point’s loss to Carlos Quintana in June 2006, a fight from which Quintana easily defeated Julio by literally boxing circles around him and making him eat a lot of jabs and counter punches. Following that bout, Julio reeled off seven straight wins, beating the likes of Ishe Smith and Cornelius Bundrage along the way. It was hoped that Julio would have improved enough with his boxing skills to defeat a polished fighter like WBO champion Dzinziruk. However, as it turned out, Julio was beaten just as easily – if not worse – by Dzinziruk as he was by Quintana in 2006.

Julio Decisions Smith

julio5643.jpgBy Eric Thomas: In a close fight, Colombian light middleweight contender Joel Julio (33-1, 30 KOs) pounded out a close 10-round unanimous decision over star from The Contender reality television series Ishe Smith (19-3, 9 KOs) on Wednesday night at the River Rock Casino, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Julio, 23, was coming off of five consecutive wins after experiencing a shocking 12-round unanimous decision to Carlos Quintana in June 2006, started off strong against Smith, but then seemed to fade in the last five rounds of the fight as the defensive wizard Smith began bringing the fight to Julio.

Though the judges scored it 96-94, 97-93 and 96-93 all for Julio, the fight looked much closer to a draw then having an outright winner between the two. Indeed, Smith, 29, appeared to be the better overall fighter, as he applied a lot of pressure against Julio in the second half of the fight, while making him miss many of his own shots. In Julio’s case, he looked uncomfortable with all the pressure that Smith was putting on him, and seemed to be out of his realm having someone back him up for a change.
