Kell Brook compares Errol Spence Jr. to Jeff Lacy

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions2By Scott Gilfoid: In a clear sign that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) hasn’t done his homework in evaluating how talented #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) is, Brook is now comparing him to former IBF super middleweight world champion Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy, who was beaten 10 years ago by Britain’s Joe Calzaghe by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision.

Spence called Brook out last Saturday night following his 5th round knockout win over former world champion Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. At the time, Spence was going by the mistaken belief that the victory over Algieri made him the IBF mandatory challenger to Brook.

Lemieux vs. Guerrero & Lacy vs. Beterbiev on May 24th at Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada

lemieux334By Allan Fox: #10 IBF, #11 WBO, David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KO’s) will be back in the ring next month against 27-year-old former world title challenger Fernando Guerrero (26-2, 19 KO’s) in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds on the undercard of the title fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Lemieux is taking a considerable step up in class in taking this fight, as Guerrero can fight a little bit as he’s shown in the past with wins over Ossie Duran, Derrick Findley, Gabriel Rosado, Michael Walker, Jessie Nicklow, and Ishe Smith. Guerrero has run into problems in knockout losses to Grady Brewer and Peter Quillin. You have to wonder whether Guerrero’s ability to take a good shot has diminished since his loss to Quillin.

By Michael Byrne: This weekend saw Jeff Lacy back in the ring for the first time since being embarrassed by Dhafir Smith in 2010. His fight was against Martin Verdin (20-16-2), so it’s clear he plans on taking the comeback slowly, which is advisable: he didn’t look too good.

Jeff Lacy to fight on August 24th in St. Petersburg, Florida

lacy4444By Eric Thomas: 36-year-old former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy (25-4, 17 KO’s) will be returning to the ring on August 24th against a still to be determined opponent in his home city of St. Petersburg, Florida, according to Fightnews. Lacy hasn’t fought in three years since losing by a 12 round unanimous decision to journeyman Dhafir Smith I December 2010.

Lacy has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights, and it’s unknown what he’s expecting to accomplish with this comeback. If his goals are small and he’s just looking to get a little money by fighting journeyman then he’s going to be successful.

However, it’s doubtful at this point whether a 36-year-old Lacy will be able to have an impact on the super middleweight division like he did in his prime.

Rees: My fight with Broner is like Calzaghe vs. Lacy

broner452By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1, 18 KO’s) sees his fight with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) next month on February 16th as being the exact same fight scenario as the March 2006 fight between Joe Calzaghe and Jeff Lacy. Rees sees himself as being the Calzaghe and the unbeaten Broner as Lacy. It’s pretty funny comparison, but if Rees actually believes it than I really feel sorry for him.

Rees said to livefight.com “It’s the exactly the same scenario. The Americans pump their fighters up to no end but it’ll be the same as that fight in mine.”

So let me get this straight. Rees sees himself as another Calzaghe? Oh, that is amusing. We’re talking delusions of grandeur here. If Rees as another Calzaghe than why did he get knocked out by Andriy Kotelnik in 2008?

Image: Jeff Lacy vs. Dhafir Smith on December 11thBy Jim Dower: Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy (25-3, 17 KO’s) will be making his first appearance in over a year on December 11th when he faces journeyman Dhafir Smith (23-19-7, 4 KO’s) in a 12 round bout for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization super middleweight title at the Jannus Landing, in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Lacy, 33, has lost two out of his last three fights and hasn’t looked good since before injuring his left rotator cuff in his fight with Vitaly Tsypko four years ago in December 2006. Lacy, who once had one of the best left hooks in all of boxing, can no longer throw his left hook with nearly the same power after having his shoulder operated on for the injury.
