Rees: My fight with Broner is like Calzaghe vs. Lacy

broner452By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1, 18 KO’s) sees his fight with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) next month on February 16th as being the exact same fight scenario as the March 2006 fight between Joe Calzaghe and Jeff Lacy. Rees sees himself as being the Calzaghe and the unbeaten Broner as Lacy. It’s pretty funny comparison, but if Rees actually believes it than I really feel sorry for him.

Rees said to livefight.com “It’s the exactly the same scenario. The Americans pump their fighters up to no end but it’ll be the same as that fight in mine.”

So let me get this straight. Rees sees himself as another Calzaghe? Oh, that is amusing. We’re talking delusions of grandeur here. If Rees as another Calzaghe than why did he get knocked out by Andriy Kotelnik in 2008? Why hasn’t Rees fought any world class fighters for the past four years since he got spanked by Kotelnik? It’s taken this long for Rees to finally step it up again because he’s been fighting nothing but domestic and Euro level opposition in the last four years. Would Calzaghe have done that?

Seriously now, Rees is going to get trounced by Broner on February 16th and there’s not much he can do about it? He can visualize Broner being another Lacy all he wants but on February 16th he’s going to find out that he’s just been playing tricks on himself by seeing Broner in that role because he’s not Lacy. Broner has been facing high caliber opposition and beating them with ease.

If you look at Lacy’s resume, he was fighting weak 2nd tier opposition up until the time he fought Calzaghe. We never saw Lacy face anyone good until he stepped it up and then he got exposed. You can’t say that about Broner because he’s been fighting quality opposition.

Rees doesn’t see Broner knocking him out, saying “It’s not happening this time.”

I hate to be the one to break this to you, Rees, but you’re going to get knocked out by Broner on February 16th and it’s going to be painful. You’re either going to get knocked out in the traditional fashion with you hitting the deck or the referee or possibly your corner will choose to halt the fight to save you from taking anymore punishment. You’re getting knocked out and that’s just the way it is. Broner has too much talent for you and you can think of him as another Lacy or whoever comes to mind, but he’s still going to knock you out. And he’s also going to knock Ricky Burns out if he steps it up and takes the fight with him, which I doubt he will after he sees what Broner is going to do to you.
