Golovkin: Martin Murray is a big test for me

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) sees his fight against #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) as being a huge test for him and a very serious fight with a lot on the line when the two of them face each other next month on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin – Murray: Can Martin take 12 rounds of punishment?

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: In less than a month from now 32-year-old Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) will be stepping up a level to take on what is clearly the biggest test of his career in facing knockout artist Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) for his WBA Super World middleweight title on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

It could be all but impossible for Murray to be able to take more than 3-4 rounds of punishment against Golovkin in this fight. Murray has good punch resistance, but he’s going to be getting hit in the head and body by arguably the hardest hitter in the division in Golovkin and that’s going to make it tough on Murray to upright for long.

The heirs to Mayweather’s throne

canelo90By Jl A common subject among boxing fans is who will become the p4p star once Floyd ‘money’ Mayweather Jr retires from the sport. Mayweather has two fights left on his contract with Showtime.

Both of these fights will take place this year so by November Floyd may have retired from the sport, I highly doubt he will continue to fight once his contract ends as with him being almost 40 I don’t see him risking the all important ‘0’ on his record.

Murray V Golovkin: Martin needs a Miracle

murray82By B.G.B: Martin Murray is perhaps the most overlooked and underestimated contender in the middleweight division. He has an outstanding professional record of 29 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat. A hard fought battle against former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm ended in a draw back in 2011. Murray proved that he was a worthy contender that night and may have been awarded a victory on points had the bout not taken place in Germany.

Murray’s only loss was even more questionable losing to former WBC champion Sergio Martinez in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2013. Murray knocked Martinez down twice although only one of the knockdowns was made official by the referee for some strange ruling. Personally I felt Martin had done more than enough to dethrone the pound for pound star in his own back yard but not surprisingly the judges saw differently.

Golovkin on target weight for Martin Murray fight

golovkinBy Scott Gilfoid: With only a month to go before his title defense against Britain’s Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs), WBA middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) hit the scales in their 30-day weigh-in on Wednesday in Johannesburg, South Africa for their February 21st fight at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin weighed in at 172 pounds, which was within the World Boxing Council’s limits for the 30-day weigh-in. Murray weighed in slightly less at 169 pounds. We don’t really know how much weight Murray had to strip off in order to make the weigh-in today, because he’s a huge middleweight and considered to be the bigger fighter than Golovkin.

Froch not interested in Hopkins or Golovkin fights, will wait for Chavez Jr for summer bout

froch7343By Scott Gilfoid: This past week 50-year-old Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) expressed interest in moving down to super middleweight to face IBF/WBA 168lb champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) in a fight that would have made big waves in both the UK and the United States. Unfortunately, Froch says he’s not interested in facing Hopkins or Gennady Golovkin and “is prepared to wait” for the Julio Chavez Jr bout, according to the Telegraph.co.uk.

Chavez Jr tentatively is scheduled for a fight on April 18th against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara.

Lemieux wants Golovkin, Canelo or Cotto

lemieux4545By Dan Ambrose: New Golden Boy Promotions signee middleweight contender David Lemieux (33-2, 31 KOs) is aiming big for his fights in 2015 with Golden Boy. Lemieux, #2 WBC, #4 WBO, #5 IBF, #13 WBA, reportedly wants to face Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez this year.

At 26, with his biggest win of his career being his recent 10th round stoppage win over trial horse Gabriel Rosado, it’s very ambitious of Lemieux to be seeking out fighters this high up instead of Lemieux continuing to aim for the low hanging targets.

Geale doesn’t like Martin Murray’s chances against Golovkin

murray53By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) has a high #1 ranking with the World Boxing Council, but former world champion Daniel Geale doesn’t believe it’s going to ultimately help him next month when Murray gets inside the ring with the talented and hard hitting WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) in their fight on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Geale, a recent knockout victim of Golovkin’s, doesn’t rule out a victory for the 32-year-old Murray in this clash, but he doesn’t have high hopes for the big middleweight.

Golovkin’s promoter compares him to Mike Tyson

golovkin44By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is comparing the hard hitting Golovkin to another Mike Tyson with the way that he’s been knocking out all of his opponents and quickly building up a huge fan base in a short period of time the same way Tyson did during his career.

Golovkin has stopped his last 18 opponents over a 7-year period. The last guy to go the distance with Golovkin was back in 2008 when Amar Amari was able to make it through 8 rounds in losing a one-sided unanimous decision.
