Roach hoping Pacquiao will KO Rios

pac31By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach still has bad blood with Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) for the time in 2010 when he imitated on video the way that has problems speaking. Rios was seen on video making fun of Roach in front of Antonio Margarito, and seemingly enjoying himself why Margarito laughed at his imitation of Roach.

That’s one of the reasons why Roach is hoping that his fighter Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) will knock Rios out next month on November 23rd at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Roach plans on reducing Pacquiao’s training

jmm_ko_pacBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach wants to back Manny Pacquiao’s training time off in the last part of his training camp in order to keep him from overdoing it for his fight next month against Brandon Rios in Macao, China.

Perhaps because of the sting of his back to back losses in his last two fights, Pacquiao has been training at a feverish pace to get into shape for the Rios bout. While it’s been said that Pac is looking great, he may end up getting diminishing returns if he keeps working out at this level. There’s just a month to go before the fight and Roach doesn’t want to use the 34-yard-old Pacquiao up before the fight.

Roach wants Mayweather & Marquez for Pacquiao

roach4523By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t mind looking past Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) for a much hoped for mega fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014 and a 5th fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. Roach wants both of those fights to take place in 2014, but it’s not looking good right now that Pacquiao will get either of those fights for a variety of reasons.

The immediate thing that could stop Pacquiao from fighting those guys is him not being able to get past Rios on November 23rd. You can’t ignore the fact that Pacquiao is coming off of a terrible knockout loss to Marquez from last December, and while Roach can talk until he’s blue in the face that the knockout is just part of the sport, there’s a chance that Pacquiao may not be the same fighter.

Roach eager for Cotto-Mayweather rematch

roach5By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says he’d really like for his fighter Miguel Cotto to get a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and says that Cotto thinks he could beat him now with the condition that he was in last Saturday night in destroying Delvin Rodriguez in a fight that was televised by HBO from Orlando, Florida.

Roach said this via Hustleboss “Miguel told me two days ago that if he was in the shape that he is now, he would have won that fight [against Mayweather], and I believe that. I would love to have that rematch.”

Roach says Cotto wants Mayweather rematch

mayweather223By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says his fighter Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) is gunning for a big rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014 after Cotto takes care of his opponent for this Saturday night Devlin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) and then beats either Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Sergio Martinez.

This could be the only way that one of Roach’s fighters is able to face Mayweather Jr., as we already saw how Roach’s #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao had a couple chances to fight Mayweather go up in smoke for various reasons.

Roach believes he’s helped improve Miguel Cotto

cotto21312By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach has the tough task of trying to resurrect Miguel Cotto’s failing career. Roach is the latest of the trainer’s that Cotto has signed up with, and it’s possible that we could see Roach gone as well if he’s not able to magically bring the aging soon to be 33-year-old Cotto back to his glory days before the beating he took from Antonio Margarito in their first fight in 2008.

Roach believes he’s brought about improvement in Cotto’s game. How much improvement he’s not saying, but it’s likely that the improvement is negligible and not enough to have Cotto beating the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Austin Trout.

Roach: Cotto’s fight with Delvin Rodriguez is a must-win

roach54By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach sees Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) with his back literally against the wall in his fight in 2 weeks against fringe junior middleweight contender Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) on October 5th at the Amway Center, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Roach has tinkered with the 32-year-old Cotto’s fighting style, and he now has him throwing a lot more left hooks to the body compared to what he’s been doing in his recent bouts. Roach believes bringing back Cotto’s body punching will be the fountain of youth for the aging Puerto Rican star. I’m not so sure if that’s going to bring about any real change in him.

Roach doesn’t want Cotto to face Pacquiao again

roach1By Dan Ambrose: If trainer Freddie Roach gets his way Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) and Manny Pacquiao will never face each other again. Roach doesn’t want the two to fight each other now that both of them are friends and both are being trained by Roach. There’s history between them, as Pacquiao stopped Cotto in the 12th round in catch-weight fight in November 2009.

That was when Pacquiao was still in his prime and capable of moving around the ring quickly, and fighting 3 minutes of every round and able to handle hard punches. Things have changed for Manny since then unfortunately with him losing his last two fights and looking like just a shell of the fighter that beat Cotto in 2009.

Roach interested in Cotto vs. Canelo fight

cotto43By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach is interested in matching his fighter Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the near future if the fight can get made. Roach thinks Canelo is a little flat-footed, slow of hand and not a really big puncher.

Roach feels those are the reasons why Floyd Mayweather Jr. was able to dominate the 23-year-old last Saturday night. Roach felt that if Canelo had more power then Mayweather wouldn’t have been able to stand in front of him the way he did.

Before he can start thinking about facing the red-haired Canelo, Cotto has to get past his next opponent Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) on October 5th at the Amway Center, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Khan: Roach can help Nathan Cleverly improve

cleverly666By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan thinks former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) could come back from his 4th round knockout loss without any problems if he would simply move his training operations over to the United States and start being trained by Freddie Roach at the Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California.

Khan really believes that Roach can turn things around for the struggling fighter. How precisely Roach would be able to fix Cleverly’s lack of power, defense and hand speed is the big question. By the time a fighter is 26, he’s usually about as powerful as he’ll ever be.
