Frankie Gomez vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for Canelo-Khan card
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions are reportedly in the process of putting together the finishing touches of negotiations between welterweight Frankie Gomez (20-0, 13 KOs) and 35-year-old Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) for the undercard of the HBO pay-per-view fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan.
Both Herrera and Gomez are moving up in weight to 147. Gomez, 24, already moved up in weight a couple of fights ago after struggling to make the 140lb division weight limit. However, Gomez came in at 150 for his fight against Jorge Silva last October, and you have to wonder how long he’ll be able to make weight for the 147lb division.
I’m sure Golden Boy wants to try to keep Gomez at 147 somehow, because that division gives him his best and possibly his only chance of being a major player.
Jo Jo Diaz defeats Tamayo; Gomez decisions Silva – Results
By Dan Ambrose: In a card filled with mismatches, unbeaten featherweight prospect Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (18-0, 10 KOs) easily defeated an over-matched Ruben Tamayo (23-7-4, 15 KOs) by a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night in a fight on Estrella TV from the Fantasy Springs Events Center in Indio, California.

Weights: Canelo 154.5, Kirkland 154.5, Gomez vs. Soto fight called off
By Dan Ambrose: In a clear sign that it might be time for light welterweight contender Frankie Gomez to start thinking about moving up to welterweight, he failed to make weight today for his now cancelled fight against former two division world champion Humberto Soto on Saturday at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Frankie Gomez vs. Humberto Soto could steal show on Saturday on Canelo-Kirkland card
By Dan Ambrose: In contrast to last Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight card that didn’t have any competitive fights on the undercard, this Saturday’s fight card headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. James Kirkland has an excellent fight between #5 IBF 140 pound contender Humberto Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs) and #8 IBF Frankie Gomez (18-0, 13 KOs) at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The fight could very well eclipse the main event fight because the Canelo-Kirkland fight is widely seen as a mismatch by many boxing fans. But with Gomez-Soto, it’s really a 50-50 fight. The fight card will be televised on HBO World Championship Boxing.
Humberto Soto vs. Frankie Gomez on Canelo-Kirkland undercard on May 9th
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya will be taking a big risk with his unbeaten fighter #8 IBF light welterweight contender Frankie Gomez (18-0, 13 KOs) in matching him against 34-year-old former two division world champion Humberto Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs) on May 9th on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. James Kirkland fight at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The fights, Canelo-Kirkland and Gomez-Soto, will be televised on HBO.
#8 IBF Gomez hasn’t fought anyone near the same class as Soto before in his career. The closest thing that Gomez has gotten to fighting someone like Soto is his recent fight against Vernon Paris, who Gomez defeated by a lopsided 10 round decision last year in July.
Frankie Gomez dominates Vernon Paris
By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten light welterweight Frankie Gomez (18-0, 13 KO’s) remained unbeaten with his toughest test of his career in beating Vernon Paris (28-2, 16 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.
