By Dan Ambrose: In a card filled with mismatches, unbeaten featherweight prospect Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (18-0, 10 KOs) easily defeated an over-matched Ruben Tamayo (23-7-4, 15 KOs) by a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night in a fight on Estrella TV from the Fantasy Springs Events Center in Indio, California.

The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. The 5’6” Diaz dealt with the taller 5’10” Tamayo’s height advantage really well by attacking him to the body all night long, and not staying on the outside the way Tamayo wanted him to.

It’s a pity the two main fights on this card were such mismatches because it would have been a good card if they had bothered matching Jo Jo Diaz and Frankie Gomez against quality fighters.

In other action on the card, the junior middleweight sized light welterweight Frankie Gomez (19-0, 13 KOs) used his weight advantage over the lighter journeyman Jorge Silva (19-10-2. 12 KOs) to defeat him by a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision.

The judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. Gomez pressured Silva all night long in landing well with power shots to the head and body. However, Gomez suffered a swollen eye in the 6th and a cut from a clash of heads in the 9th.

The 23-year-old Gomez came in over the 147lb limit for the fight at 150¼. The weight limit then had to be increased for the contract. It’s unknown why Gomez persists in fighting in the light welterweight division because he clearly can’t make the weight for the division any longer.

The last time that Gomez was able to make weight for the 140lb division was last year in July 2014 in his fight against Vernon Paris. Last May, Gomez came in six pounds over the 141lb limit for his fight against Humberto Soto last May. The fight then had to be cancelled because the 147lb Gomez couldn’t take any additional weight off.
