Spence feels that his win over Algieri showed that he’s right up there at the same level as Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. Spence believes he’s in the top five of the best welterweights in the division right now after the punching display he put on last Saturday night. I think Spence is underselling himself. I think he’s better than all those guys by far.

By Scott Gilfoid: Errol Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) showed last night why people are picking him out to be Floyd Mayweather Jr’s replacement as the biggest star in the sport. Spence completely crushed Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) in knocking him around the ring like a rag doll before putting him out of his misery in the 5th round with a perfectly placed left hook to the head that left Algieri on the canvas in a pile of bruised flesh.

With Algieri’s scalp now in his possession, Spence is now targeting IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) to take his IBF strap from him. Spence says he has no doubt in his mind that he’ll beat the 29-year-old Brook when he gets him inside the ring, and he’s willing to go over to England to wipe him out if he has to.

(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) made easy work of former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) in stopping him in the 5th round on Saturday night in an IBF 147lb title eliminator at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Spence knocked Algieri down three times in the fight in dropping him once in the 4th and twice in the 5th. The fight was halted after the second knockdown. In the final knockdown, Algieri backed up against the ropes and was nailed by a hard left hook to the head that put him down. In the first knockdown of the 5th, Algieri charged forward and ran into a big left hand that knocked him down with a shot that sent him skidding on his backside. Algieri admitted afterwards that he had suffered an ankle injury on the first knockdown in the 5th round. He wasn’t strong on his feet after getting knocked down.

McGuigan says he thinks Spence reminds him a lot of boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard. McGuigan believes that Spence could get Algieri out of there tonight to do what Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan couldn’t do in stopping the former WBO 140lb champion inside the distance.

The younger fighter Spence weighed in slightly heavier at 146.4lbs compared to the 145.6lbs the older 31-year-old Algieri weighed in at. For today’s weigh-in.

Spence Jr. is getting a purse of just $225,000 compared to the larger $325,000 purse of the 31-year-old Algieri. If Spence beats Algieri, and then defeats IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in 2017, then Spence’s purses will increase by a large amount. He won’t be finding himself getting smaller purses against the likes of Algieri in the future if everything goes well for him. Spence is on the express train to stardom, and whoever gets in his way is going to get run over. This could end badly for Algieri on Saturday night if he hasn’t improved since his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao.
