Errol Spence Jr. vs. Konstantin Ponomarev scheduled for purse bid next week

Image: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Konstantin Ponomarev scheduled for purse bid next weekBy Jeff Aranow: The promoters and management for unbeaten #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) and #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev (30-0, 13 KOs) haven’t been able to come to an agreement for an IBF welterweight eliminator bout to decide on the mandatory challenger to IBF 147lb champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs).

The International Boxing Federation will be having a purse bid next week on May 17 if Spence and Ponomarev’s management haven’t worked out a deal by then. Spence is managed by Al Haymon and Ponomarev is promoted by Top Rank.

Berto: I want Kell Brook to fight Errol Spence

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions8By Scott Gilfoid: Andre Berto says he wants to see if IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) is for real or not by him taking on the challenge that was made to him by the talented #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) after his 5th round knockout win over Chris Algieri on April 16 of his month in New York. Spence immediately called Brook out for a fight.

Brook, 29, has shown no indication that he’ll be taking the 26-year-old Spence up on his offer. Brook says he wants a big named opponent for a stadium fight in the summer. However, the name that is being mentioned as Brook’s next opponent Lamont Peterson, the former IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs). He’s lost 2 out of his last 5 fights. Some stadium fight that’ll be.

Porter: Errol Spence beats Kell Brook

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions1By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter is picking unbeaten Errol Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) to defeat IBF champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) when the two of them face each other in the future. Like many boxing fans and members of the media, Porter was highly impressed with Spence’s 5th round knockout win over Chris Algieri this month in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Spence accomplished what no other fighter had done before in stopping Algieri. Porter doesn’t think Algieri has been the same fighter since his grueling win over Ruslan Provodnikov in 2014. Algieri got the win, but he took some punishment early in the fight before he was able to get on his bike and box his way to a decision.

Kell Brook compares Errol Spence Jr. to Jeff Lacy

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions2By Scott Gilfoid: In a clear sign that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) hasn’t done his homework in evaluating how talented #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) is, Brook is now comparing him to former IBF super middleweight world champion Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy, who was beaten 10 years ago by Britain’s Joe Calzaghe by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision.

Spence called Brook out last Saturday night following his 5th round knockout win over former world champion Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. At the time, Spence was going by the mistaken belief that the victory over Algieri made him the IBF mandatory challenger to Brook.

Kell Brook wants Broner or Danny Garcia for July fight

brook455By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook says he wants to fight either WBC 147lb champion Danny “Swift” Garcia or former four division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner for his next fight in July. Brook, 29, is leaving it up to his promoter Eddie Hearn to get one of those two fighters.

I think it’s a pipe dream on Brook’s part in wanting Broner or Garcia. There’s talk that those fighters will be facing each other next. After that, Garcia and Amir Khan will likely be fighting.

Khan is already saying he wants Garcia after his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 7. It would seem that Brook has very little chance of fighting Broner or Garcia. I guess Brook may have to fight another Frankie Gavin or Kevin Bizier type fighter unfortunately.

Khan doubts Brook will face Errol Spence

khan778By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan says he thinks IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook is wasting his career by failing to take on the big names in the sport, and he thinks the soon to be 30-year-old Brook needs to step it up and start facing the best. However, Khan suspects that Brook will vacate his IBF 147lb title rather than facing unbeaten Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs), who is one step away from becoming Brook’s new IBF mandatory challenger.

Khan calls Brook “Mr. Mandatory” due to him having already fought two mandatory challengers in his two years as the IBF welterweight champion. But Khan thinks that Brook will choose not to fight his next mandatory if it winds up being the 26-year-old Spence.

Errol Spence Jr. must face Konstantin Ponomarev in IBF eliminator

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions2By Scott Gilfoid: Well, you knew it was too good to be true. Instead of undefeated Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) being he mandatory challenger for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) straightaway, the International Boxing Federation is requiring that Spence face #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev (30-0, 13 KOs) in an official IBF eliminator before he can become Brook’s mandatory. In other words, it wasn’t enough that Spence beat the highly accomplished Chris Algieri last Saturday night.

Spence will need to fight the 23-year-old light hitting Ponomarev before he can earn the mandatory spot to fight Brook. This doesn’t mean that Brook will have extra time to make voluntary defenses for the next two years, because he’s going to need to start negotiations for a fight against the winner of the Spence vs. Ponomarev until late in the year in October. Ponomarev = Algieri 2.0 in my view. For the fans who didn’t get to see Spence fight Algieri last Saturday night, they’ll get a chance to see Spence fight a very similar fighter in Algieri in Ponomarev. I see this as a pure slaughter, and it’s too bad the IBF couldn’t find a better fighter to rank at #3 than Ponomarev. Spence is #2 with the IBF, and sadly Kevin Bizier is #1.

Dibella: I don’t think Kell Brook wants any part of Errol Spence

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions10By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) has had things pretty easy during his long 12-year pro career in the sport.

Brook is about to turn 30-years-old next month and the only name fighter he has on his resume is Shawn Porter. Errol Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) wants to give Brook a real name to add to his resume by facing him this year if he’s ready to step up a couple levels and take the fight rather than continuing with his trend of facing weaker contenders like Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier.

Errol Spence: The only notable win for Keith Thurman is Guerrero

Image: Errol Spence: The only notable win for Keith Thurman is GuerreroBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) was asked about WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman at Spence’s press conference last Saturday night following his 5th round knockout win over Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center Brooklyn, New York.

It was pointed out by a member of the media that Thurman had dismissed any notion of a fight against Spence last year due to Thurman’s belief that Spence didn’t have the experience to be fighting him. Spence finally got a chance to fire back at Thurman last Saturday when he pointed out that the only name on Thurman’s entire resume is Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, who clearly is on the downside of his career with three defeats in his last five fights.

Chris Algieri won’t be retiring

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions6By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) won’t be retiring from the sport after having been blown apart in five rounds last Saturday night by unbeaten talent Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) in their highly watched fight on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC.

Algieri’s latest defeat was his third in his last four fights, and with that many defeats, I wouldn’t blame him for walking away if that was something that he chose to do. Algieri’s promoter Joe DeGuardia wants to set him up with a tune-up fight to get him back on the winning track, but he doesn’t know if he’s going to be able to do that.
