Abraham vs. Miranda: Will Edison Get His Revenge?

miranda6464.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs) hopes to get a fair decision this time out when he takes on unbeaten middleweight Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KOs) in their revenge match in June 21st at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. Miranda, 27, was given what many people consider a poor decision when he lost to Abraham by a controversial 12-round unanimous decision in September 2006. Miranda, who dominated most of the rounds, breaking Abraham’s jaw in the fourth round and appearing to do more than enough to get the win over Abraham.

However, Miranda was penalized a total of five points in the fight, ranging from low blows to the use of his head. There’s no question that Abraham was guilty of using his head on one occasion but as far as the low blows go, those were punches on the border of Abraham’s beltline and it seemed way out of line to penalize Miranda for such questionable shots. Worse, however, was that the fight was stopped in the fourth round to have Abraham’s jaw looked at by a ring side doctor. Abraham ended up being allowed to continue fighting but he mostly was limited to brief flurries in every round, missing the vast majority of his punches every time. Abraham only landed a small handful of punches in each round following the fifth round, while taking tremendous punishment from Miranda, who continuously landed big bombs with both hands.

Miranda Kessler Update

By Team Kessler: Now we know why the panther is an endangered species. A mere kitten has just chased Edison “La Pantera” Miranda up a tree. The “kitten” is former and future world super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler. To put it in boxing language, Leon Margules, head of Seminole Warriors Boxing has just informed HBO executives that he is “not interested” in having Miranda fight former WBA and WBC champion Kessler on June 21 despite the fact that Kessler readily agreed to holding the fight for the soon to be vacated WBA super middleweight title at the Warriors Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

Miranda vs. Bute?

By Tony Krebs: With former super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler backing out and opting not to fight the Colombian knockout artist Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs), he has now set his sights on IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (22-0, 18 KOs) in hopes of lining up a bout with him instead of Kessler. Bute, 28, reportedly is available with no fights ahead of him, making him the perfect candidate for the television friendly Miranda. Bute, whose style of fighting is rather similar to Kessler, only that he’s slower, less powerful and has less speedier movement around the ring.

Miranda To Fight Kessler

miranda4646333.jpgBy Nate Anderson: In the latest boxing news, super middleweight contender Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs) will be reportedly fighting Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler (39-1, 29 KOs), the former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion, on May 24th in Montreal, Canada. Miranda, 27, a one-time middleweight contender until late last year when he was stopped by Kelly Pavlik in a 7th round TKO, has been after Kessler for awhile now, trying to pressure him into a fight with him. Kessler up until today, had been ignoring Miranda’s rants to the media, instead looking for other alternatives for his first bout back since his defeat to super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe in November 2007.

However, after one particular nasty goading from Miranda this week, in which Miranda called Kessler a kitten, it appeared that Kessler had had enough and decided quickly on taking the fight with Miranda. It probably was a no-brainer for Kessler, for Miranda is one of the most popular non-champions in the division, perhaps even more popular than IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. The cable networks are also interested in seeing the fight made, meaning that this will be a much better paying bout than what Kessler, now a non-champion, would get otherwise.

Kessler Declines Bout With Miranda

Former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (39-1, 29 KOs) has turned down a potential match with the knockout artist Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs), a move that appears to have upset the Colombian star, enough so that he unleashed a torrent of abuse at the 29 year-old Kessler, saying “I have a message for Mikkel Kessler, or Kessler the Kitten as I call him after he gave away his belts without a fight last year.

Miranda Angling For Fights Against Abraham & Taylor

By Tim Williams: In recent weeks, knockout artist Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KOs) has been quite vocal in his comments about IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham and former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, calling out the latter, while seemingly questioning the courage of the former by suggesting that he lacks courage because of his tendency to fight lower quality opponents, always in Germany. Specifically, Miranda, 27, is referring to the latest opponent of Abraham, Elvin Ayala (18-2-1, 8 KO’s), a fighter that has done little to distinguish himself in comparison to other top middleweights in the IBF, like Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor. Miranda had this to say in the past week in regards to Abraham’s low quality opponents:

Miranda Annihilates Banks

The fight went pretty much as I thought it would, though I figured that super middelweight Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KO’s) 1) would take longer to catch up to David Banks (15-4-1, 2 KO’s), the former star from “The Contender.” However, Banks made it easy for Miranda, trying to actually fight him instead of running, which is what I had predicted that Banks would do for most of the fight. Though it was interesting watching Miranda trying to catch up to Banks, it was no surprize that when he caught him it would be over in an instant.

Miranda Faces Banks On Friday

Former middleweight contender Edison Miranda (29-2, 25 KOs) returns to the ring this Friday against former reality television fighter David Banks (15-2-1) on Friday Night Fights at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. Miranda, 27, now fighting in the super middleweight division, is hoping to erase the sting from his embarrassing 7th round TKO loss to Kelly Pavlik on May 18th, 2007, by destroying the 24 year-old Banks on National television. It will effectively be a boxer vs. a slugger in this bout, as Banks, who’s mainly known for competing on “The Contender” boxing program on ESPN, has almost zero power to match his zero knockouts on his record. He’ll likely be running for his life against Miranda, as he doesn’t have the type of power to stand in front of Miranda and trade like Pavlik did.
