Should the WBC sanction Deontay Wilder – Shannon Briggs?

deontay32 - Copy (2)By Gav Duthie: Bob Arum recently stated it is impossible to rank the enormity of fights today against those of yesteryear largely because we live in a different time. He was referring to the world of social media and the accessibility of communications. One fighter who has hugely taken advantage of this brand new world is Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs. Briggs to his credit has fought 7 times in exactly 1 year since his comeback in April 2014 after a four year hiatus from the sport.

These fights wouldn’t be described as anything more than bar room brawls but in spite of this he continues to make headlines. Briggs has used the mediums of twitter and Youtube as well as borderline unhealthy stalking to goad Wladimir Klitschko and more recently Deontay Wilder into fighting him. Every piece of work is signed off with #letsgochamp.

Wladimir Klitschko: A fight against Deontay Wilder can happen at the start of next year

wladimir588By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) says he thinks he’ll be facing WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) in a unification fight at the start of 2016. Klitschko first has to get past Britain’s Tyson Fury, his WBO mandatory challenger.

If Wladimir wins that fight, he’ll likely be facing the talented 6’7” Wilder in a huge fight in early next year. There’s also a slight chance that Wladimir could slip in another title defense in late 2015 before the Deontay fight, although I doubt it.

Deontay Wilder and Shannon Briggs liven up a dull Klitschko-Jennings weigh-in

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO heavyweight champ Shannon Briggs and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder both lived up what was an otherwise dull weigh-in for IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (63-3, 53 KOs) and challenger Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs). Briggs initially was taunting Wladimir by repeatedly saying “Let’s go champ” in a move that appears to be designed to get the 39-year-old Wladimir to agree to fight him.

Wladimir Klitschko: I’d rather fight Deontay Wilder in a PPV bout

wladimir55By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (63-3, 53 KOs) says he would prefer to face the WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) because he thinks it would be a pay-per-view bout. However, Wladimir will likely face #1 WBO Tyson Fury later on this year unless he chooses for the big money fight against the 6’7” Deontay.

The Fury will make Wladimir a lot of money as well because it will be a huge in Europe where the fight will obviously take place. But before Wladimir can get the big money fights against Fury and Wilder, he’s going to need to get past unbeaten American Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) in their fight this Saturday on April 25th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Deontay Wilder possible for June 20th in Las Vegas

wilder991By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) is being rumored to return to the ring on June 20th in Las Vegas, Nevada. There isn’t an opponent picked out yet, but they’re looking at three potential options for the 6’7” Deontay.

The fight, if it takes place, will be televised on one of the major free networks on Premier Boxing Champions, according to RingTV.com. Former three division world champion Adrien Broner could also be on the card. He’d been talking about fighting in Cincinnati, Ohio, but there’s now a possibility that he could end up fighting on the same card as Wilder.

David Haye wants Deontay Wilder clash

hayeBy Scott Gilfoid: 34-year-old former two division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) is interested in facing WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) in the future once he gets his stalled career back on track. The soon to be 35-year-old Haye hasn’t fought in three years since beating Dereck Chisora by a 5th round knockout in July of 2012.

Haye has had nothing but problems since then, suffering injuries on three separate occasions that wiped out fights against Manuel Charr and Tyson Fury. At this point it’s hard to imagine Haye being able to make it through a training camp in one piece without suffering a debilitating injury of some sort.

Wladimir Klitschko focused on Bryant Jennings, not interested in Wilder or Fury now

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite two huge fights being on the horizon against unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) and Britain’s Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs), IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (63-3, 53 KOs) is totally focused on his fight this Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing against America’s Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Wladimir Klitschko: There’s only one heavyweight champion

IMG_4965(Photo credit: HBO) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (63-3-, 53 KOs) sees himself as the real heavyweight champion in the world right now despite the fact that there are two other heavyweight champions in WBC champ Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) and WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev (33-2-1, 20 KOs). I think the 6’7” Deontay would have something to say about Wladimir saying that there’s only one heavyweight champion, because Wilder sees the 39-year-old Wladimir as someone he can beat.

Wilder believes that the only reason that Tyson Fury is interested in facing Wladimir is because he sees him now as being old and beatable to him.

Deontay Wilder says he’ll lose interest in facing Fury if he loses to Klitschko

deontay32 - Copy (2)By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO, #3 IBF, #3 WBC, #5 WBA heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) could get a world title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) likely without having to wait until the end of the year like the 6’9” Fury is having to wait for his title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Fury prefers to take the fight against Wladimir rather than facing the 6’7” talented Deontay for his WBC strap. Fury says that he wants to face Wladimir, 39, because he sees him as the top heavyweight in the division, and wants the credit with beating him.

Deontay Wilder: The world is mine!

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) is in a great position for his first title defense of his WBC heavyweight title. After beating WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne by an impressive 12 round unanimous decision last January to capture the WBC title, the 6’7” Wilder is now able to make a voluntary defense of his title against pretty much anyone in the top 15 that he wants to.
