Alcine – Rodriguez fight to a controversial draw

By Jim Dower: In a battle of aging fighters, 38-year-old Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KO’s) and Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KO’s) fought to a controversial 10 round draw on Friday night at the Olympic Stadium, in Montreal, Quebec, Canad. The final judges scores were 97-93 for Rodriguez, 96-94 for Alcine and 95-95 even. The judge that scored it for Rodriguez seemed to have the correct score for the fight because Rodriguez dominated the fight with his pressure, combination punching and superior power.

Cotto is back in prime form

cotto900By Timothy Medina  Since December 1st, 2012, many people have claimed that Miguel Cotto is not the same fighter he once was and that he is washed up. With two consecutive loses in 2012, it seemed to most boxing fans that Cotto’s career was over. Cotto only had one last chance to prove those who doubted him wrong in a bout against Delvin Rodriguez. Last night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida it only took Cotto three rounds to prove them wrong.

Rodriguez’s advantage in height and arm length did not matter last night. Cotto was able to take every punch Rodriguez threw at him, and just walked right through them. Everybody who was watching the fight was seeing the Cotto that we have not seen in years. From the first round, Cotto was already displaying one of the most devastating punches of the past decade and what made him successful through most of his career. I am speaking of Cotto’s famous left hook to the body.

Arum wants Cotto to face Sergio Martinez next

cotto75By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach both want Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) to face WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) for his WBC 160 lb. strap in his next fight following his 3rd round TKO win last Saturday night of Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-3, 16 KO’s) in Orlando, Florida. A win over Sergio would give Cotto a 4th world division title.

Arum and Roach think that Cotto has the skills to be successful in moving up in weight. Sergio is still recovering from a hand and knee injury, and he won’t be available to fight until next year sometime depending on how well he rehabs his knee.

Cotto defeats Rodriguez by 3rd round stoppage

cotto765By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) ended up his two-fight losing streak tonight in destroying an over-matched Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-3, 16 KO’s) in a 3rd round knockout at the Amway Center, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Cotto dropped Rodriguez with two big left hooks to the head in the 3rd round. Referee Frank Sanatore Jr. didn’t give Rodriguez a chance to continue to and immediately stopped the fight at 0:18 of the round.

Cotto used his left hook more to the body in this fight than he had in his previous fights dating back to earlier in his career when that was his main weapon.

Everything on the line for Cotto tonight against Rodriguez

cotto023By: Timothy Medina  Tonight in the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3) faces Miguel Cotto (37-4-0). While this is simply a tune-up fight for Miguel Cotto, this is going to be the biggest fight in the career of Rodriguez.

Even though this fight is bigger for Rodriguez than it is for Cotto, this fight will determine how the legacy of Cotto will end.

Cotto is one of the biggest fighters of the past decade and a future Hall of Famer. He has been in many wars and has been victorious against men such as Paulie Malignaggi, Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Joshua Clottey, and Antonio Margarito. It is hard to imagine Cotto losing to the likes of Rodriguez, but with the damage Cotto has taken over the years, it is possible for Rodriguez to pull off a miracle tonight.

Cotto tries again

904(Photo Credit : Chris Farina -copyright 2013) By Rachel Aylett: Tonight sees the hugely popular Miguel Cotto make his return to the ring following his defeat in December of last year against the then WBA light-middleweight champion Austin Trout. He faces long-time fringe contender Delvin Rodriguez in a non-title fight that is scheduled for 12 rounds. The bout takes place in Orlando, Florida.

Although thousands of people will disagree, it is my belief that Cotto is pretty much a shot fighter. The way he was so easily defeated by Trout was worrying indeed. Cotto left the ring that night without giving the customary post-fight interview to Showtime’s Jim Gray. He looked confused and, possibly, disgusted with his performance as he stormed out of the ring. I saw that fight as totally one-sided, agreeing with the judge that scored it 119-109. I think those who had it closer just couldn’t believe what they were watching and gave Cotto some rounds just because, well, he’s Cotto!!

Cotto-Rodriguez weigh-in results

cotto55By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) made weight today in coming in at 153.2 lbs. for his do-or-die fight on HBO this Saturday against #4 WBA, #9 WBO, #11 WBC, #11 IBF, Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO’s) at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. Rodriguez weighed in right at the junior middleweight limit at 154.

It goes without saying that Cotto, #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #7 WBO, is in a must win situation after his losses in his last two fights against Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr. A loss to Delvin Rodriguez on Saturday will effectively be the end of Cotto’s career.

Trout wants Canelo rematch or winner of Cotto-Rodriguez

canelo6By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) is hoping that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will step up to the plate and agree to give him a rematch so that Trout can clear up the controversy over their fight last April in which Canelo won’t be a questionable decision in El Paso, Texas.

If Trout can’t get a fight against the recently beaten Canelo, then he wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s fight between Miguel Cotto and Delvin Rodriguez.

Trout has already beaten Rodriguez by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in June of last year, so it’s not likely that Rodriguez will want a second helping of Trout after that experience.
