Also in action in yet another busy weekend for boxing fans are WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBC Featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in defenses of their titles.

And where else to start this weeks preview but in the modern day Mecca of boxing the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and the fight that has everyone talking yet again unbeaten WBC Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0) and Robert Guerrero (31-1-1).

Abner Mares faces Daniel Ponce De Leon this Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

By Allan Fox: WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his tile this Saturday night against former two division world champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) in a Showtime/CBS pay-per-view bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This fight is going to be a real test for both fighters because each of them has a lot to prove. De Leon, 32, needs to prove that he can beat the elite fighters in the sport because he’s failed in the past in defeats against Juan Manuel Lopez, Adrien Broner and Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Mares vs. Ponce De Leon to be co-feature on Mayweather-Guerrero card on May 4th

mares34By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is moving the featherweight bout between WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) vs. Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) to the co-feature position on the May 4th Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero card on Showtime/CBS pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Mares-De Leon fight was previously scheduled for April 20th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Schaefer needed to move the fight from this date due to WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who was supposed to be the co-feature on the Mayweather-Guerrero card against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, decided to pull out of the card after Mayweather decided not to sign for a fight against him in September.

Abner Mares vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon on April 20th on Showtime

mares#1By Dan Ambrose: With the hard hitting and very dangerous #6 WBC Jay Velez out of the way due to an injury he recently suffered, WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) will now be defending his World Boxing Council 126 pound title against former two division world champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) on April 20th in a fight that will be televised on Showtime at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, according to RingTV.

Mares said this on his social media site tonight: “Done deal! We will be fighting Daniel Ponce for his WBC title this April 20.”

Sulaiman makes Mares the mandatory for Ponce De Leon

de leon322By Chris Williams: #6 WBC Jayson Velez blew his chance at a title shot against WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) recently when Velez injured his ankle.

Instead of that fight taking place after Velez’s ankle heals, World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman has reportedly moved former WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) to the head of the pack become the official challenger for the 32-year-old Ponce De Leon.

De Leon-Velez fight undercard to still take place on March 2nd

abril545By Dan Ambrose: While the scheduled March 2nd main event fight between WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon and Jayson Velez has been canceled due to an ankle injury Velez suffered, the undercard fights will still take place on that date, and will be televised by Showtime at the Aollo Theater, in New York, New York, USA.

Instead of being able to see De Leon vs. Velez in the main event, boxing fans will have to settle for watching #1 WBA Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) battle unbeaten Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) for the vacant WBA World lightweight title.

Jayson Velez suffers ankle injury, pulls out of De Leon fight

velez5By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten #6 WBC featherweight contender Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s) has suffered an ankle injury and won’t be able to face WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) on their scheduled March 2nd fight date on Showtime at the Apollo Theater, New York. The card will still take place on that date minus Velez-De Leon.

According to Steve Kim, Frank Espinosa, the manager for the 32-year-old De Leon, is confirming that Velez is pulling out of the fight with De Leon. There’s no word about when the two will be fighting.

Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Jayson Velez on 3/2: De Leon with tough opponent

velez5By Dan Ambrose: It took WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) four years to finally capture another world title after having lost his WBO super bantamweight title to a young Juan Manuel Lopez in June 2008 in a 1st round knockout loss.

Last September, De Leon defeated WBC featherweight champ Jhonny Gonzalez by an 8th round technical decision to capture the WBC title. Instead of being able to enjoy the title, De Leon’s brief time as the champion may end in his very first title defense against unbeaten #5 WBC Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s) on March 2nd in New York.

velez5By Eric Thomas: WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO’s) will be making his first and possibly his last title defense against unbeaten #5 WBC, #11 WBO, #14 IBF contender Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s) on March 2nd at a venue still to be determined in the United States.

Ponce De Leon, 32, just finished capturing the World Boxing Council title in his last fight against former champion Jhonny Gonzalez in an 8th round technical decision victory in September. De Leon knocked Gonzalez in the 6th and the fight was halted in the 8th after Gonzalez suffered a bad cut over his right eye after the two fighters clashed heads.
