By Jim Dower: Making his second defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) featherweight title, champion Cristobal Cruz (39-11-1, 23 KO’s) defeated his Jorge Solis (37-2-2, 27 KO’s) by a narrow 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Palenque de Gallos, Tuxtla Gutierrez, in Chiappas, Mexico.

Kelly Pavlik’s trainer Jack Loew believes the middleweight champion must defeat Marco Antonio Rubio this weekend to get his career back on track. Pavlik fights for the first time since he lost to Bernard Hopkins in October last year. Loew told the Steve Bunce Boxing Hour on Setanta Sports News that this was a fight that Pavlik could not afford to lose. He said:

World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman announced today that WBC heavyweight world champion Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine and official challenger Juan Carlos Gomez of Cuba/Germany have reached an agreement and signed for their mandatory fight. The purse offer, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled.
Shelly Finkel, representing Klitschko, and Ahmet Oner, representing Gomez, told President Sulaiman about the agreement.
