1st– Minto plods forward straight to the champion, minus a jab, looking for openings. Huck looks to be playing the part of counter-puncher. Huck’s hands are obviously faster. The champ’s punches are sharper as well, but nothing of note lands solidly. Minto slips to the canvas, and referee Robert Byrd correctly rules no knockdown.
By Sam Gregory: In the co-main event on HBO boxing from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Chris Arreola scored his twenty-fifth knockout against the very game Brian Minto in the heavyweight division. From the opening bell it was clear to see that Arreola was the bigger stronger man. In the first round Arreola mixed up his punches landing his powerful jab that when it landed solid came close to knocking Minto off his feet.
By Jim Dower: Heavyweight Chris Arreola (28-1, 27 KOs) looked good tonight in destroying heavyweight contender Brian Minto (34-3, 21 KO’s) in a 4th round stoppage tonight at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Arreola, 28, dropped Minto twice in the 4th round with huge shots to the head. After the 2nd knockdown, referee Ed Cotton stepped in and ended the fight at 2:40 of the 4th round.
By Sean McDaniel: Light middleweight Paul Williams (37-1, 27 KO’s) weighed in at 157 for his bout tomorrow against Sergio Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Martinez, 34, weighed 159. Williams was supposed to be fighting World Boxing Council/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavli. However, Pavlik had to back out due to a staph infection on his left hand. Rather than wait around to fight Pavlik later in the month, Williams decided to go ahead and take the fight with Martinez.
By Jason Kim: Once beaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (27-1, 24 KO’s) will be seeing action against number #7 ranked heavyweight contender Brian Minto (34-2, 21 KO’s) on December 5th at the Boardwalk Hall, in New Jersey. Arreola, 28, is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 10th round stoppage at the hands of World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on September 26th.
NEW YORK (November 7, 2008) – NABA light middleweight champion “Mean” Joe Greene has been added to the star-studded “The Grande Event” card, promoted by Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing, November 21 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.
By Jason Kim: Undersized heavyweight Brian Minto (31-2, 20 KOs) made easy work of former Tough man competitor John Poole (20-3, 18 KOs) knocking him down three times and stopping him in the 1st round on Wednesday night at the Pullman Park, in Butler, Pennsylvania. For Minto, 33, it was high 4th consecutive 1st round knockout, albeit all against low C-class competition. Poore, 37, had good size at 6’3″, but little else going for him in terms of boxing skills. He never even attempted to use his size to try and establish his jab in the fight, allowing the short, stocky 5’11” Minto move in unmolested to the inside, and tag him with big uppercuts and hooks to the head.
Minto looked slow in the early going, slower than I had remembered him being in previous fights of his. However, Poore wasn’t in the position to take advantage of Minto’s lack of hand speed, for he had none of his own and didn’t appear to know how to pull the trigger with his own punches. Mostly, though, Poore just looked terrified, like he was over his head, he knew it, and didn’t know what to do other than stand there and take shots.
