Vera stops Bondorovas, looks poor

vera11By Jim Dower: #1 WBO middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-6, 13 KO’s) stayed in the running for a payday fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. tonight by beating 33-year-old Donatas Bondorovas (17-4-1, 6 KO’s) by a highly questionable 7th round stoppage due to two small cuts that Bondorovas had suffered at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York, USA.

Referee Charlie Fitch asked Bondorovas if he could see well enough to continue after the 7th round, and it appears there was a miscommunication with Fitch not understanding that Bondorovas said “I can see.” Fitch thought he heard Bondorovas say “I can’t see very well.”

The stoppage very well may have saved the fight for the better known Vera because he appeared to be losing the fight at the time of the stoppage, and Bondorovas was the one that controlling the action with his right hands.

Fighters that move up in weight get a bad rap

By Robert Elmore: When I hear people say “they fought everybody back in the day”, I can assume they mean fighters who had no intentions of moving up in weight. Therefore, that statement holds much weight. And if fighters in the lower divisions wanted a shot at the title, they had to move up.

Golovkin vs. Ishida this Saturday in stay busy fight in Monte Carlo

k2ggg031613lunchsumioB(Photo credit/Sumio Yamada) By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) will be facing 37-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 KO’s) this Saturday night in a stay busy fight for the 30-year-old Golovkin at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin was hoping to get contender Matthew Macklin and IBF champion Daniel Geale to face him for the March 30th fight, but neither of them agreed to face him. WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin was another fighter that they wanted to face in March, but he’s scheduled to defend his title against Fernando Guerero next month on April 27th.

If Golovkin gets past the 6’1” Ishida, which seems likely, then he’s hoping that former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm, #2 WBA, will agree to face him if he’s given the chance.

Brian Vera vs. Donatas Bondoravas this Friday, March 29th on ESPN2

vera1 - CopyBy Allan Fox: #1 WBO middleweight contender Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) will be back in the ring against Donatas Bondorovas (17-3-1, 6 KO’s) this Friday night on ESPN2 in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York, USA.

Vera, 31, is making a quick turnaround as he recently was on ESPN2 in his 10th round TKO victory over former WBO junior middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk in mostly one-sided fight that ended with Vera sending a beaten Dzinziruk to the canvas in the 10th after having trapped him in the corner.

Vera needs to win this fight this Saturday night against the 33-year-old Lithuanian Bondorovas to keep in line for a big fight against either former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in June.

Provodnikov now a full-time welterweight

provodnikov111By Chris Williams: #3 WBO Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO’s) has reportedly officially moved up to the welterweight division following his 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBO welterweight champion on March 16th of this month at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Steve Kim is reporting that the 29-year-old Provodnikov has moved up in weight from 140.

The move makes a lot of sense for Provodnikov because he had been said to be struggling to make the weight for the light welterweight class. At least this way he doesn’t have to worry about draining himself each time he fights to get down to 140. But more important than that, Provodnikov is now fighting in the weight class where he has the most opportunities.

Hughie Fury vs. David Whittom tonight in Montreal

627By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Hughie Fury will be making his pro debut tonight against journeyman David Whittom (11-19-1, 7 KO’s) in a fight scheduled for four rounds on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Darnell Boone card at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

Fury, listed at 6’8”, is the nephew of unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, and like Tyson, Hughie has little in the way of power, and tends to slap a lot with his punches. Hughie looks closer to 6’6” than 6’8”, so don’t buy the 6’8” business because he clearly looks to beat three inches shorter than Tyson when standing up.

Tyson and his promoter Mick Hennessey see Hughie as a future world champion. At 18, he’ll have to improve dramatically for that to happen because he’s too much of a slapper and too weak to compete with any of the current champions. He’s also old looking for 18, and it makes you wonder whether this guy is one of those types that matures quickly but then is washed up by the time he’s in his early 30s.

Boxing Era’s have changed: Embrace it or don’t watch

By Robert Elmore: Boxing fans love to compare one era to another. The fans that grew during the 80’s say that the 90’s have nothing on their era. Those who grew up in the 70’s say the 80’s have nothing their era. You get the idea. As much as people try to put the “greatest of all time” moniker on their favorite fighter, it doesn’t work.

Arum: Having competing shows on the same night enhances the ratings

YouTube video
By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum sees no problem with his promotional team and rival Golden Boy Promotions scheduling fights on the same night that compete with one another.

Arum doesn’t see that as something would cause boxing fans to have to pick and choose which fight they want to watch of the two because he believes that boxing fans use DVRs in high numbers that allows them to watch two different things.

Speaking with Radio Raheem, Arum said “Everybody has a DVR. Everybody can tape one fight and watch another. There are no conflicts if both of the networks go on the same night.

Zou Shiming vs. Eleazar Valenzuela on April 6th in Macau

shiming2By Chris Williams: Former two time Olympic Gold Medalist Zou Shiming will be making his pro debut next month against Mexican flyweight Eleazar Valenzuela (2-1-2, 1 KO’s) in a scheduled four round bout at the Venetian Casino & Resort in Macao, China.

Shiming, 31, is a recent Top Rank addition to their stable and will be fighting at light flyweight. Trainer Freddie Roach has already worked out with Shiming, and he says he was surprised at the power of Shiming, although he’s not considered a power puncher at all or even close to being one.
