Canelo-Angulo undercard takes shape

canelo665By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has stacked the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo undercard with smaller fighters for their March 8th pay-per-view bout on Showtime from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a risky thing for Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer to do in putting little super featherweights and lightweights as Canelo’s chief support on the card, because the Canelo vs. Angulo fight is a mismatch and it likely will be about as entertaining as Canelo’s fight with Josesito Lopez.

Is Canelo vs. Angulo a PPV worthy fight?

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and Golden Boy Promotions are picking the wrong time to have him fight for the first time as a pay-per-view headliner in his fight with the recently knocked out Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s). If Boxing fans want to see the red-haired Canelo’s next fight on March 8th against Angulo on Showtime PPV, then they’ll have to purchase the fight on PPV. It’s unknown what the fight card will cost, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it goes for $59.99.

Fans don’t have an issue with Canelo fighting an easy mark like Angulo, because Canelo is coming off of a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was totally outclassed by Mayweather in almost humiliating fashion in that fight.

Canelo-Angulo fight rumored to have vacant WBC 154 title up for grabs

HATTON PROMOTIONS would like to address rumours suggesting that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s March 8 clash with fellow Mexican Alfredo Angulo has been made for the vacant WBC light-middleweight title.

At the present time, undefeated Sergey Rabchenko is the WBC’s number one ranked contender and holds the sanctioning body’s prestigious Silver title.

Canelo vs. Angulo signed for March 8th!

canelo544By Dan Ambrose: The March 8th fight between former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) is reportedly a done deal. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the fight has been signed off. The fight will be taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it’s expected to be televised on Showtime pay-per-view.

Hopefully, Golden Boy Promotions will change their mind about making the Canelo-Angulo fight PPV, because it’s not nearly a good enough fight on it’s own for it to be a bout that boxing fans should have to pay for. This could change if Golden Boy stacks the undercard with fights like Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana II. That would make it worthwhile for a PPV card, but short of that it’s not really PPV worthy.

Canelo to fight Alfredo Angulo next on March 8th – Breaking News

canelo6756By Dan Ambrose: The red-haired former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will reportedly be fighting #7 WBA Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) on March 8th on Showtime pay-per-view, according to Fightnews.

This isn’t really unexpected, because the only other fighter under serious consideration for the fight was IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina, but they likely rejected him due to him not being well known among casual boxing fans and because of his fighting style involving lots of holding.

Hunter thinks Angulo can beat Canelo

angulo78 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Virgil Hunter thinks his fighter Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) has a really good shot at beating former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) on March 8th, if Angulo is the one that ultimately gets selected by the red-haired Canelo to take the fight. Canelo was already turned down by Miguel Cotto for a fight, and now Canelo’s options are down to the following fighters: IBF 154 lb. champion Carlos Molina, Alfredo Angulo or WBA champ Erislandy Lara.

Angulo looked bad in losing his last fight against Lara by a 10th round stoppage last June. It’s hard to see the fight and think that Angulo would have any real chance to beat Canelo. Angulo was just walking into shots left and right by Lara, and picked apart all night long. Angulo did get a couple of knockdowns of Lara, but it still was a mostly one-sided fight other than the knockdowns.

Prediction on Golden Boys future plans

broner999Golden Boy promotions last grand event “The One” didn’t live up to hype and the action didn’t play as we expected. Although others may have different opinions, that’s what I thought of the event. Golden Boy had yet to release news regarding their future events and they surprised me and I’m sure many hardcore boxing fans with 2 stacked cards for December of this year.

December 7th will be featuring a co main event that  gave me butterflies and is a fight I’ve been anticipating for months now. Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s Vs Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) for the WBA interim title.

Like many I was hoping that fight would have been put on “The One” rather than Carlos Molina vs Ishe Smith but what’s happened has happened. But that fight could be a fight of the year due to Trout and Lara’s slick style of fighting. And I was also amused by the twitter trash talk between the two.

Exciting Fighters; It’s okay to have defense. No, Really it is

lara454By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: I love to watch every style of boxing, although technical fighters are my favorite. Exciting-all-out-fighters sells tickets and they bring the fans back to see them fight. But they lack one thing that can probably sustain their career and that is defense. It doesn’t have to be that much if they don’t want to. I say just enough not to have your brain rattled to the point of concussion (as Tim Bradley said he had in his post fight interview in his bout with Ruslan Provodnikov).

What I saw last Saturday night from Alfredo Angulo in his bout with Erislandy Lara fight was utterly ridiculous. The man was being hit with the same 1-2 combo repeatedly. Did anybody in Angulo’s corner’ or more importantly Alfredo himself stop say “I need to do something about this. I’m getting hit with same combination”. Was he that focused on trying to finish off Lara or please the crowd that he disregarded safety?

Angulo suffers contusion to left eye, vows to come back

angulo554By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (22-0, 3, 18 KO’s) says he suffered no broken bones or permanent injury to his left eye from his 10th round stoppage loss to Erislandy Lara last Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Angulo was stopped in the 10th round by Lara after turning his back and walking away after getting hit hard on his badly left eye. Angulo said that he wasn’t looking to quit at the time; he felt that he had been thumbed in the eye and couldn’t see out of it.

Angulo said this in a statement “Dr. Pearlman Hicks has informed me that I only suffered a contusion and my eye specialist thankfully sees no permanent injury to my eye…I accept the decision made by the referee to stop the fight and look forward to getting back in the ring in the future. I will give you a better show in my next fight.”

Alfredo Angulo to see eye doctor on Monday

angulo78By Allan Fox: Junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) was checked out at Harbor UCLA Medical Center after his 10th round TKO loss to Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) last night to have his injured left eye examined. According to USA Today, the medical staff found no signs of a fractured orbital bone.

However, there weren’t any X-rays or an MRI done on Angulo’s head. Angulo’s co-manager Michael Miller reportedly isn’t happy that Angulo wasn’t checked out with an X-ray or MRI, and he wants to have Angulo see an ophthalmologist this Monday to have him look at Angulo’s left eye.

Miller told usatoday.com “The plastic surgeon at ringside said he thought that not only was it broken, he thought it might be shattered in pieces.
