By Dan Ambrose: Last night, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer didn’t want to hear the complaints that members of the media were making about Adrien Broner’s 12 round split decision win over WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) last Saturday night being a controversial win.
Schaefer saw it as a clear victory for Broner and he agreed with the 117-111 score that one of the judges gave for the fight last night. Broner won the fight by the scores 115-113, 117-111 scored for him, and 115-113 for Malignaggi.
By Allan Fox: At last night’s post-fight press conference, newly crowned WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) said he wants to go after more world titles in other weight classes. He said specifically that he might move down to 140, 135 or 130 to go after some of world champions in those weight classes. It would appear that Broner doesn’t intend on defending his WBA 147 lb. title.
Broner said “Now it’s time to get more belts in somebody else’s weight class. I don’t know if it’s light welterweight or I might go back down to lightweight or junior lightweight [super featherweight]. I really don’t matter. Whatever is the better fight for me, I don’t care what weight it’s at. The fans can pick the opponent.”
Now I don’t know what you all think, but I just witnessed a slightly over the hill WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) losing a very close hometown 12 round split decision to a very over hyped and somewhat overrated young fighter in Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
In Malignaggi, he struggled to beat the weakest of the three main welterweight champions by scores of 115-113 117-111 Broner and 115-113 the other way to Malignaggi. If Broner thinks he can just waltz into the ring and clown around against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley and IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander like he did against Maglinaggi tonight, then he needs to clock himself on the whiskers and wake himself up, and don’t even start thinking about him fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr.
By Hector Gonzalez: After tonight’s fight, Adrien Broner vs Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner failed to prove that he is boxing’s next big thing. My scorecard is as follows; rounds 1-5, 10 for Malignaggi and rounds 6-9, 11 & 12 for Broner, which would technically be a draw. I believe that some rounds could have gone either way, but I will give Broner enthusiasts the benefit of the doubt because who won and who lost is not the point of the article.
The point is that Broner did not meet the expectation. After all for a guy who was the 13- 1 favorite, he certainly did not look like it.
To fully appreciate my perspective you have to go back in time. We’ll start with a fight that happened in 2009. It was Fernando Quintero vs Adrien Broner.
By Dan Ambrose: We found out tonight that Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) isn’t going to be the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. We also found out that he couldn’t even conclusively beat what many boxing fans felt was the weakest of the welterweight champions in WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s).
Broner got the victory by a 12 round split decision by the scores 115-113 and 117-111, and 115-113 for Malignaggi. Broner did not shine in this fight or even come close to it. If you want to make excuses for why Broner looked so bad, you can say that he didn’t carry his power up from the lightweight division or he was having problems with the weight.

The judges scored it 115-113, 117-111 for Broner, and 115-113 for Malignaggi.
Broner did not look good at all in this fight as he didn’t throw enough punches. It appeared that he was just hoping to land a big shot that would hurt Paulie. When it didn’t happen, Broner didn’t have the work rate to put the fight away. He was too busy using the Mayweather shoulder role and just focusing on defense instead of his own offense.

I’ve written a few pieces now about showing respect to fighters, even those we don’t like. For tonight though, I’m willing to put that sentiment aside. Let me tell you why I would like to see Broner get dropped tonight, reasons other than hatred.
For his sake, I would like to see Adrien Broner taught some serious lessons tonight. The guy feels like he is on top of the world, so much so, that he even hinted at being able to beat Floyd Mayweather. I’m not a Mayweather follower, but I am an honest human and I know that such a fight would not be good for Broner. On top of this, Broner’s outside the ring antics are absurd. He’s, “about billions,” as if that is what a true warrior is ever about.

If Broner loses to Malignaggi, then he’ll still have his WBC lightweight title to fall back on. A loss to Malignaggi would be a huge blow to Broner’s career no doubt and a clear sign that he doesn’t have what it takes to fight against welterweights.

Broner doesn’t see how Malignaggi will be able to escape from the ring to survive for 12 rounds.
Broner said to RingTV, “I have no problems chasing a cat. He really didn’t want to look at me [during the stare down at the weigh-in]. He don’t want any confrontations with me. I’ll exploit all his weaknesses…I knew I was going to stop him before I signed the contract.”
