By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Vic Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27 KO’s) defeated Yonnhy Perez (20-2-1, 14 KO’s) by a 5th round technical decision last night in Showtime’s bantamweight tournament at the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles, California. The 35-year-old Darchinyan showed his old punching power and aggression that previously made him one of the best fighters in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions. Since moving up to bantamweight, however, Darchinyan’s punching power has abandoned him as he’s had two 12 round decision losses, one 12 round decision win over little known Eric Barcelona and now a 5th round technical decision victory against Perez.

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten WBC Silver bantamweight champion Abner Mares (21-0-1, 12 Ko’s) wants a shot against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s). Mares’ bantamweight finals tournament fight with Joseph Agbeko went down the tubes yesterday after Agbeko collapsed after a flight due to back ailment. With Agbeko now out of the tournament final and no replacement opponents found, Mares is now free to look for his next fight. A bout against Donaire would seem to be the perfect solution.

By Jim Dower: IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (28-2, 22 KO’s) won’t be able to defend his International Boxing Federation title this Saturday night in Showtime’s Bantamweight tournament against challenger Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) due to Agbeko suffering a case of sciatica after a long plane ride. Agbeko collapsed shortly after the plane flight and was face down on the canvas unable to move for a short period of time. He was then taken to a nearby hospital and has been ruled medically unable to fight for Saturday night against Mares.

Darchinyan and his manager filed a protest after the defeat, feeling that they should have won the fight.
