Body Armour: Is Floyd Mayweather’s Defence Impenetrable?

floyd5325By Raj Parmar: As the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana clash rapidly approaches this Saturday, boxing fans who feel Maidana has a real chance to upset Mayweather (despite the heavy odds stacked against him) point out that “El Chino” was able to break through the shoulder roll defence that Mayweather uses when he punished Adrien Broner over the course of 12 rounds.

I re-watched Floyd’s latest fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and it is apparent that Mayweather and Broner’s defence are nothing alike. Where Broner uses a similar hand position as Mayweather, one arm across the body and the other protecting the chin, their postures and movements are astronomically different. Broner squares straight up to you without moving his feet very much, while Floyd offers a much more complex situation.

Humbled: Adrien Broner talks new life outlook since Maidana loss

broner44421(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Raj Parmar: In the weeks and months leading up to his December 2013 clash with Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner was having the time of his life. He had just become a three division champion at 23 years old after beating Pauli Malignaggi in his welterweight debut and was living his dreams. He dabbled into rapping as he went on a city to city tour reciting his lyrics to hip hop fans and was regularly seen partying with various sorts of women. He even released a short tape of himself with two women engaging in a threesome.

His reckless behavior away from the ring brought him lots of attention and he seemingly enjoyed every bit of it. He headed into the Maidana fight full of confidence and cockiness, both of which were literally knocked out of him in the second round of the fight when Maidana dropped him to the canvas for the first time in his career. Marcos would go on to viciously beat up Broner and put a halt to the suggestions that Broner would be the next big superstar of boxing.

In-Fighting: Signs of division in Golden Boy slowly showing up

delahoya92By Raj Parmar: Back in 2007, then super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya faced off against Floyd Mayweather in one of the richest fights in boxing history. The fight was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions (founded by De La Hoya in 2002) and a heated build up between Oscar and Mayweather ensued, so much that there is still high tension between the two to this day.

Both Oscar and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer were greatly disappointed when Mayweather pulled out a split decision win, as Oscar and Richard were very close personally and professionally at this point.

Eye for an Eye: Mikey Garcia drops in on Mayweather training camp

garcia0By Raj Parmar: As Floyd Mayweather trained in front of media members on his scheduled open training day session yesterday, there was an interesting observer in the gym. Watching quietly and intently as Mayweather fiercely pounded his fists away in the ring was super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia, who took in all the action as he stood alongside the many photographers and cameraman that were absorbing in Mayweather’s every move.

Mikey is the younger brother of trainer Robert Garcia, who is currently training Marcos Maidana with hopes of being the first ones to give Mayweather a loss on May 3.

Bad Timing: Maidana’s purse for Mayweather fight being withheld due to Lawsuit

maidana52By Raj Parmar: It was only a few days ago that Leonard Ellerbe (CEO of Mayweather Promotions) surprisingly walked into the gym of trainer Robert Garcia during Marcos Maidana’s media day training session. It was unusual to see such a prominent figure from the Mayweather camp come all the way to Los Angeles and many were interested in why.

Ellerbe stated it was because he had been hearing lots of rumblings that Maidana has been looking phenomenal in training and hears that he has been doing serious damage to sparring partners. Ellerbe stated he felt the need to check out the gym for himself and get a closer look.

Unfair Criticism: Why Maidana Was the Right Choice for Mayweather

maidana790By Raj Parmar: For the past few days Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has caused quite an uproar in the boxing world by loudly complaining about the upcoming Floyd Mayweather – Marcos Maidana title fight approaching on May 3. Arum considers the Golden Boy Promotions event extremely uncompetitive and has actually called upon boxing fans to boycott the fight in order to drive Golden Boy and Mayweather to set up more competitive fights for the world’s top pound for pound star.

As these words are coming from a boxing promoter who has decades of proven experience in staging high caliber fight cards, it is easy to take his words at face value and go along with the notion that the fight is a mismatch and that Mayweather (45-0) has purposely selected an opponent who stands no chance to dethrone him.
