Britain has 5 Heavyweights ranked ahead of Deontay Wilder

wilder322By Lee Smith: I’ve heard people saying that Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) is the next big thing, the next heavyweight champion, the man to take over from the Klitschko’s. If this was true then surely after 27 fights and 27 KO’s he would be a world champ by now or at least be in the running for a world title shot. However, he isn’t a world champ, nor is he even close to getting a world title shot. In fact, he isn’t even ranked in the top 25 by BoxRec.

This came as a surprise to me taking into account the amount of fights he’s had. So I looked at his record and the people he had fought and straight away knew exactly why he had such a poor ranking. The fighters he’s beaten (if you want to call them fighters) were shocking and I mean shocking.

Fury-Cunningham: The most entertaining heavyweight fight in years

fury3333By Lee Smith: British Heavyweight Contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) defeated American Steve Cunningham 25-6 by 7th round KO last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, to further stake a claim for a World Title Shot.

Despite a lot of people criticizing Fury for his sloppy performance in the opening rounds I think he deserves a lot more credit that he is getting. In fact both fighter deserve credit for putting on a fight which was probably the most entertaining heavyweight fight in years. With two contenders going toe-to-toe from the off and neither wanting to win a boring fight on points.

The fight swung one way then the other. It had knockdowns, point deductions, two fighters who wanted to win and most of all the one thing boxing fans want from a heavyweight fighter…A knock out victory.

British fights this weekend: Cleverly-Krasniqi, Fury-Cunningham & Chisora-Avila

cleverly6By Lee Smith: There are a couple of Brits fighting this weekend in some interesting fights. All are at different stages in there career and if any of them were to lose then there careers would be taking a huge huge step back. However, I am predicting that won’t happen.

Derek Chisora is fighting virtually unknown Argentinian Hector Alfredo Avila in a comeback fight having lost his last 3 fights. Chisora is actually a lot better than his 15-4 record shows; having only lost to top class opposition. He is a former British and Commonwealth champion. When he was just 14-0, he signed to fight Wladimir Klitschko for the World Title. The fight never took place and Chisora eventually lost the titles to now World Title Contender Tyson Fury on Points.
