Golovkin and the need for rivalries

golovkin53By Jose Muradas: Boxing needs mega-rivalries that will bring a buzz back to the sport. It’s time for boxing to  knock MMA on it’s backside. We know that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will never happen. Pacquiao  looks to be on the downside of his career, Marquez is one fight away from retirement. Once Mayweather leaves the star power in boxing is gone.

My suggestion is  to start building new rivalries now. Now is the time for boxing  to start making the fights that will create those rivalries. The fighter at the center of it all: Gennady Golovkin. He is a machine, and reminds me of a young Roberto Duran. He can box, he can punch, and oh my, can he punch!  He will fight anybody in his division, he shows no fear, and he is must see boxing. Fighters, such as Canelo Alvarez, Carl Froch, and Peter Quillin, would make for heated rivalries.

Those fighters come to mind when you think superior defense.

Remembering Hagler’s career

By Jose Muradas: “Doubt me, that’s when I get stronger.” Those were words echoed by Marvin Hagler (62-3-2, 52 KO’s) and to those who doubted him in the ring, the lesson was well learned afterwards. From 1980 thru 1987 there was no better middleweight on the planet. Hagler made twelve successful title defenses in that span. He ripped thru challengers one by one, leaving a long list of fighters rethinking the profession they chose.
