Destinations for Mayweather’s four titles

YouTube video

By Gav Duthie: Ambitious WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has proposed two super 6 tournaments to decide the fate of Floyd Mayweather’s vacated belts in the welterweight and light middleweight divisions. If they can convince all boxers and promoters to commit to the proposal the highest ranked 154lb fighters (excluding Canelo moving up to 160) are Jermell Charlo, Vanes Martirosyan, Anthony Mundine, John Jackson, Sergey Rabchenko and a resurgent Austin Trout.

At 147lbs the top ranked are Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Antonin Decaire, Marcos Maidana and Brandon Rios. Most fans would salivate at the thought of some of these fights but it is unlikely due to promoters, TV networks, injuries and other commitments.

Could Minto or Cornish spoil the party?

cornish6By Gav Duthie: I have to give credit to Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Promotions for creating an interesting show on Sept 12 involving Anthony Joshua 13-0 (13) and Dillian Whyte 15-0 (12) at the O2 arena in London. Joshua and Whyte are heavy favorites to win in separate bouts but are on a collision course to fight each other. Despite this there is an outside chance that Gary Cornish or Brian Minto could win their fights and spoil the party.

It is a risk from Matchroom to put Joshua in with a hungry contender and Whyte with a seasoned veteran but I feel it is the right decision. There must have been a temptation to go easy. In the press conference Whyte was at it with Joshua and their future fight is building itself. It didn’t really matter who they fought tomorrow but if either loses the Joshua-Whyte fight is over, can this actually happen?

Povetkin is coming sooner or later for Deontay Wilder

povetkin666By Gav Duthie: Deontay ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Wilder 34-0 (33) kicked off 2015 in style bringing a ray of hope to a heavyweight division long forgotten by many fans. Through no fault of their own Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko brothers cooled interest in the league of the giants with their unrivaled supremacy. Due to their powerful but tactical boxing displays and to some a lack of personality popularity of heavyweights have declined over the last 20 years.

Wilder the first American champion since 2006 (Shannon Briggs) looked like he might change all that with a dominant display against Haitian Bermane Stiverne. After a shaky defence against undeserving challenger Eric Molina followed by the news he is to defend next against a similar opponent in Johann Duhaupas 32-2 (20) instead of his mandatory Alexander Povetkin many are again questioning the star qualities of Wilder.

Kell Brook v Diego Chaves: Questions for British Boxing

chaves#1By Gav Duthie: When I think about what the next year holds for Kell Brook an entire series of questions flood me. The news he is fighting Diego Chaves on October 24 in Sheffield is no surprise. Brooks future is not just important for the man himself but also has wider connotations for British boxing, Pay-per-view in the UK as well as Eddie Hearns’ Matchroom promotions as a major player.

After the retirement of Carl Froch, Kell Brook is the new face of Matchroom. With some of Hearns stable seeking advice from Al Haymon is there really enough confidence that Hearn can deliver a top flight career on his own in the UK.

My Two Cents: Guzman, Wilder, Broner, Mayweather retirement

broner6677By Gav Duthie: After being inactive for a little while on the writing front and a lack of top level boxing recently I thought I would give my thoughts on a few of the recent boxing stories in the press.

Joan Guzman retires

The wasted talent of Joan Guzman can only be blamed on one man, himself. The man from the Dominican Republic missed weight several times, failed drug tests and was extremely inactive through his career. Nevertheless I feel a sadness towards any boxer with unfulfilled potential.

What next for Amir Khan

khan666By Gav Duthie: The final nail has been hammered into the coffin regarding the hopes for Amir Khan ever fighting Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Even if Floyd does decide to fight on passed the 49 bout unbeaten streak (shared with Rocky Marciano) after Andre Berto it is pretty clear he will never face Khan. Like it or not Amir needs to accept this and move on and build his career in other ways. How can he reach the summit of welterweight boxing without beating Mayweather. Whats next?

Access denied

Many pundits and fans have questioned Khan’s credentials in facing Mayweather but nobody anywhere would suggest that Berto is ahead in the queue. Mayweather is looking to take it easy and after a tough career fighting the best that’s his prerogative. Amir has been overlooked before but surely he realizes that not being favored over B-level fighter Andre Berto spells the end. Khan was first dismissed for Marcos Maidana despite winning a twitter poll over the Argentine to face Floyd.

Kovalev v Beterbiev and amateur/pro rivalries

kovalev5555By Gav Duthie: Before the year is out we are likely to see two rivalries rekindled from all the way back to the amateur days. Top ten pound for pound star Sergiy Kovalev 28-0-1 (25) has been cutting through his opposition with ease but climbing the ranks is former amateur rival Artur Beterbiev 9-0 (9) who claims to have ‘Krusher’ Kovalev’s number.

Beterbiev bested Kovalev twice as an amateur and is eager to repeat that success possibly on November 28th. Also in the UK Anthony Joshua 13-0 (13) can’t shake his past amateur defeat to Dillian Whyte 14-0 (11) where he was knocked down and outpointed. If he can get past Gary Cornish on Sept 12 he should face Whyte in November or December. This piece discusses some of the best former amateur to professional rivalries of the past.

Boxing preview for Rumble on the Humber – August 1st

Omar Figueroa vs Ricky BurnsBy Gav Duthie: The city of Hull plays host to their biggest ever boxing spectacle as two local lightweights Luke Campbell and Tommy Coyle lock horns. The event also boasts a good undercard full of boxers with varying agendas – the revenge of Brian Rose on Carson Jones, the latest comeback of two time world champ Ricky Burns and the profile building of heavyweight prospect Dillian Whyte. Here is my take on the fights with predictions.

Luke Campbell 11-0 v Tommy Coyle 21-2

Many fight fans are asking when Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua is going to step up in class. Fellow gold medalist Luke Campbell is definitely being handed a tougher assignment than any Joshua has received in fellow Hull boxer and stablemate Tommy Coyle.

What we learned last weekend

arreola45By Gav Duthie: A very interesting weekend of boxing has been and gone with various ramifications arising for future fights across the divisions. We witnessed top level action from Germany, the UK And the US and after catching up with it all this is what I have surmised.

Crolla is one unlucky guy

For most fans after Saturday night Anthony Crolla is a champion without the belt. For anyone who believes in Karma they may have to re-think after Crolla a local hero was once again robbed of his chance to realize a dream.

My top three Carl Froch fight nights

froch3232By Gav Duthie: We often look back at boxers of yesteryear with rose tinted spectacles. Every fighter during his career is open to criticism i.e. not fast enough, not powerful enough, no chin, one dimensional, not fighting the best etc. When you retire most of those questions disappear. All you can do is look at what they have done, limitations or not and assess.

Carl Froch 33-2 (24) has decided to call it a day instead of fighting Gennady Golovkin and after all is said in done I would like to thank Carl Froch for entertaining us over the past decade at least. Ive criticized Carl many times for his limitations many of which he would admit too himself but very few fighters could expose them over a full 12 rounds.
