The Next World Boxing Super Series: Part 3

Image: The Next World Boxing Super Series: Part 3

By Danni Rocket: This last chapter in my recent trilogy of articles is all about dreams and speculation. Part 1 was about the Bantamweights and their confirmed WBSS tournament. Several fighters had already been announced and the tourney has been officially given the go ahead, with the top four seeded fighters looking to take their pick of the unranked underdogs at some point in the coming months. In Part 2, we explored the opportunities available to the leaked first six fighters of the eight-man Light Welterweight tournament, which looks to be announced very shortly. In Part 3 I’d like to muse on the potential third weight class.

By Danni Rocket: In the first part of this article, I wrote about my personal ideal fighter selection for the Bantamweight divisions recently announced WBSS tournament. I considered popularity, world ranking/titles held, the fighters’ justification in being involved in the event, and the likelihood of them participating. In part two, I will utilize the same grading system and breakdown the fighters I’d like to see selected from the Light Welterweight division.

By Danni Rocket: With the official word on the site for the final of the Cruiserweight World Boxing Super Series expected any day now, and the finalist in both weight classes (Oleksandr Usyk, Murat Gassiev, Callum Smith, and recently announced George Groves replacement Chris Eubank Jr.) now training for their fights, the first WBSS is coming to an end. Despite not being embraced by the major US television companies, and running in to several hiccups, the tournaments have been considered a huge success.

Assessing Mikey Garcia’s Options

By Andy record: Since stopping Elio Rojas on his return in July 2016, Mikey Garcia has been one of the most watched, and most talked about fighters in the business today. He captured the WBC belt at 135lbs by brutally knocking out a dangerous fighter in Dejan Zlaticanin, and moved up to easily outpoint an unwilling, or maybe outclassed, Adrien Broner, a former four division titlist. After dropping and ultimately defeating Sergey Lipinets this weekend Garcia walked away with the formers International Boxing Federation Junior Welterweight (or Super Lightweight, if you please) title, and in the process joined the prestigious and rare club of four weight World Champions.

The SuperFly Dream

By Danni Rocket: The Super Flyweight and Flyweight divisions have been providing the boxing fans with incredible battles of both skill and heart for many years. Unfortunately, these fine displays of pugilism have been mostly only viewed by the hardened members of the boxing fraternity. Now however, this has all changed. In the last couple of years HBO has invested large amounts of airtime and money into the lower weight classes, and has gifted us with the SuperFly Series of boxing nights, bringing these incredible warriors into the mainstream.

By Danni Rocket: Due to the back to back defeats of Nicaraguan Super Flyweight Roman Gonzalez, the controversial draw between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and the recent retirement of consensus P4P King Andre “SOG” Ward, the Pound for Pound rankings of boxing’s most famous websites, magazines and organizations have suffered a major shake-up this year.

Is 2017 Already the Greatest Year Ever for Boxing?

Image: Is 2017 Already the Greatest Year Ever for Boxing?

By Danni Rocket: Let me start off by saying that the question in the title is not a rhetorical one. Although I have only been what I would consider a hardcore boxing fan since about 2004, I have spent most of my free time since catching up on the back catalogue of matches and information available on the internet, in various books, and watching classic matches broadcasted on a multitude of television channels.
