Nathan Cleverly Reveals Shocking Future Plans

cleverly777By Ciaran McKinney: The dethroned light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly has given a revealing interview as he sat in the SkySports studios acting as a pundit for the card headlined by the Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud. It was the first time the public has really been able to get an in depth look at the crestfallen Welshman. In between bouts, his fellow pundits took their opportunity to pick his mind, and Cleverly was not shy. He spoke about how, in his short and unproven time as World Champion, he had the tendency to take his foot off the gas.

This is not a surprise given the low caliber opponents served up to him by his promoter. He spoke freely about his emotions after his crushing defeat against Sergei Kovalev, stating that he considered retirement in the aftermath of the bout and honestly admitting that his game-plan to absorb the Russians power shots and break his heart failed miserably.

The Boxing News in Brief

canelo76By Ciaran McKinney: What a few couple of weeks it has been for the world of boxing, and it seems there is a new headline to read every day. The last few months have been dominated by the anticipation for “The One,” the showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout. In my my eyes at least, it lived up to expectation and more.

The unbeaten Mayweather more than confirmed himself as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time by systematically breaking down and comfortably beating the so called ‘Next Big Thing’ in the sport.

Chisora stops Scott in massive upset

chisora101By Ciaran McKinney: The first round in this intriguing bout between Dereck Chisora and the undefeated Malik Scott finished without any real fireworks. With Del Boy catching Scott with a nice right hand leaving his opponent with mild swelling beneath the eye. However Scott was the aggressor and caught Chisora with some lovely combinations and slick body shots.

The second round was certainly low key with both men seemingly putting out the feelers for the remaining 8 rounds. Low work rates from both men, seemingly another round in the bag for Scott. Exceedingly confident corner from Scott, urging their man on with strong words, the line of note ‘Showcase Yourself’.

The Monday Supplement: What We Can Take from The Brook/Campbell Card in Hull

brook333By Ciaran McKinney: Craven Park was the venue. There was a stacked card from top to bottom, each bout providing something different for the packed crowd in Hull. Eddie Hearn made something very clear in the run up to this event. Without Luke Campbell, this event would have been on a much smaller scale. A professional debut in an open air stadium, never mind headlining the bill? Matchroom would have us believe that baby-faced 25 year old truly is the real deal. But more on that later.

The first fight I shall focus on was the dust-up between domestic rivals Derry Matthews and Tommy ‘Boom Boom’ Coyle. This match was by no means a technical masterclass, and neither of these men will really ever reach the upper echelon of the sport. However, what they did achieve, was the sustained attention of the raucous crowd, who were so vocal in no small part due to local hero Coyle applying most of the pressure.

Kell Brook Stops Carson Jones. Dominant Performance

brook21By Ciaran McKinney: This bout came to be off the back of numerous delays and then the inevitable cancellation of Kell Brooks’ World Title bout versus Devon  Alexander. The special one, in recent times has been ravaged by injury and on his own admission fell out of love with the sport. The first battle between these two, was expected to be a relatively easy step up in class for Brook, however, he got the scare of his life and a true gut-check.

So the two competitors made their way to the ring, Jones seemed enthusiastic whilst Brook had an determined, concentrated stare. It was clear he meant business. The 10-Round bout started with Brook on the offensive, startling Jones with a beautiful combination, then dominating the opening 3 minutes from ‘The Special One’.

The Monday Supplement: Heavyweight Boxing, What Is Going On?

wilder46By Ciaran McKinney: Once upon a time, the heavyweight boxing scene was set alight by names such as Cassius Clay, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Joe Lewis and Rocky Marciano, to name but a few. For as long as one could recall, when these warriors plied their trade in the 200lbs and over category, they captivated spectators the world over, other divisions paled into a certain insignificance, certainly when it came to live gates, viewing figures and pay per view purchases.

It has been over 11 years since there has been a bout that can fairly be referred to as a ‘Super Fight’. This battle took place between Lennox Lewis and ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. The capacity crowd in Memphis, Tennessee witnessed a battle between two fighters that were indeed past their resplendent and brutal best.

David Price Defeated! Redemption in Ruins

price77By Ciaran McKinney: So the stage was set, an electric atmosphere provided by the capacity crowd packed inside the Echo Arena in Liverpool. The tag line for this fight read ‘Redemption’ and passionate fans of the big 6’8′ Liverpudlian David Price (15-2, 13 KO’s) were waiting for their hero to strike, to gain a measure of revenge for what had occurred  in the very same ring 5 months prior. The man with home advantage came into the fight as a strong favourite, with bookmakers seeming to think we were in for a longer and more balanced scrap.

So the fighters made their respective ways to the ring after an odd opening that featured a rendition of ‘Born in the USA’  and a little person holding the flag of the United States. However strange, the pre-match stares and facial expressions were fascinating.
