Mayweather-Pacquiao: Who has faced the better opposition? Part 1: Floyd

floyd8282828By B.G.B: The two leading fighters in the world today didn’t get to the position that they are in by facing weak opposition. Fans from both sides slam the others resume in order to establish their man as the true number one.

It seems that at this stage of their careers, fans are only interested in what’s wrong with the opponent rather than what is right.  Yes there will always be ‘haters’, but it is the same haters who seem to forget just how much both fighters have achieved throughout a combined career span of 38 years. So who has fought the better opposition?

Amir Khan: Dont wait!

khan1111By B.G.B: After a career best performance beating Devon Alexander last weekend, Amir Khan now has his sights set on Floyd Mayweather Jr. It is no surprise that Khan has expressed his desire to fight Floyd and has demanded the fight for some time now.

Khan is banking on a showdown with Floyd in 2015 on Mayweather’s next fight date May 2nd. However, there is now a very real possibility that Floyd may face long time rival Manny Pacquiao on that date if (a BIG if) an agreement between the two parties can be made.

Khan v Alexander: Amir’s toughest ever opponent

Amir Khan and Devon AlexanderBy B.G.B: Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia; these five fighters are without question the best opposition that Amir Khan has faced in his career. All five have been (or still are) world champions and are indeed world-class fighters. Khan’s record against these five is 3 wins and 2 losses. He stopped both Malignaggi and Judah and edged out Maidana in a fierce and memorable encounter. He narrowly lost to Peterson in a bout that could have gone either way regardless of the controversies surrounding the aftermath. He was however brutally battered by Garcia and eventually stopped in the 4th round in a fight that shocked the boxing world to an extent.

Canelo vs. Cotto? Not interested

cotto77By B.G.B: Oscar Dela Hoya is evidently ecstatic about the likely match up between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. In fact, Dela Hoya is so excited that he has gone as far as to say that it is a fight that fans would rather witness than the super-mega fight between the two best fighters of a generation; Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Although a fight between Cotto and Alvarez would be a big fight in terms of PPV, Dela Hoya’s statement is utterly absurd and inaccurate. What planet is Dela Hoya living on if he truly stands by that statement?

Golovkin V Ward: Money No excuse!!

golovkin0013By B.G.B: The attention of the boxing world has indeed spun towards WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) after witnessing his 18th straight KO last Saturday night in his 3rd round knockout victory over Daniel Geale (30-3, 6 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Despite having steadily improved his opposition quality it appears that GGG is simply far beyond the level he’s currently competed at which is no disrespect to his opponents and is not intended to discredit his victories.

Floyd Mayweather v Marcos Maidana 2: Enough complaints, this is a terrific fight

floyd8888By B.G.B: There has been speculation surrounding the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana 2 fight since it’s announcement and questions that were being asked of Mayweather Jr with regards to the first fight have resurfaced. Is this the right fight for Mayweather? Is this an easy fight for Mayweather? What can Mayweather prove? Is Mayweather cherry picking?

It seems that the majority of fight fans as well as uneducated haters (in relation to the sport of boxing) believe Mayweather is protecting his own unique selling point, his 0 losses record.

Pacquiao-Alvarez: Why is this fight even being mentioned!?

canelo785By B.G.B: Michael Koncz, adviser for Manny Pacquiao recently suggested that a fight between his client and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could and is likely take place at some point in the future. The popularity of both fighters is undeniable both within their home countries and across the globe. The fight would likely generate huge paydays for both fighters and bring in significant PPV numbers. These are positive factors that indeed highlight the potential this fight has in economic terms.

Unfortunately these economic terms are now more relevant than ever when it comes to match making. Simply put, if you take away the economic incentive of this fight what are you left with? A middleweight (as Alvarez SHOULD be. NOT a Welterweight) against a welterweight (Preferably Jr). The fight makes no sense in relation to the actual fighters. Pacquiao should not be looking to fight Alvarez and Alvarez should not be looking to fight Pacquiao.

Mayweather will never be considered as one of the greats if he retires now

floyd0034By B.G.B: Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) is an excellent fighter. His boxing skills and ring craft are second to none and he is a multiple time world champion that has never lost a fight. These factors have indeed culminated to title Mayweather as the P4P number 1 fighter in the world and rightfully so. His recent fight of the year candidate against Marcos Maidana has shined a new light on Floyd, however a light significantly different to what he is used to.

Unlike his more recent fights, Mayweather was pressured by a durable, determined and underestimated (by boxing fans at least) brawler which has inevitably led to cries for a rematch. The significance of this fight implied that Mayweather is still very, very good, but he is not invincible.

Chavez Jr vs. ‘GGG’ Golovkin: Dont Blink

chavez93By B.G.B: It seems that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s (29-0 26 KO’s) fearsome knockout ability is finally paying dividends. The upcoming bout with super middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr  (48-1-1 (1 nc) 32 KO’s) is without a doubt the biggest fight of Golovkin’s career thus far. But what kind of challenges can we expect Chavez to confront Golovkin with? Chavez has an impressive amount of KO’s himself and has proven that he has the ability to cause damage to fighters.

In a fight he was badly loosing against Sergio Martinez, he was able to impose himself in the final round almost getting what would’ve been a huge victory. Golovkin however, is not Sergio Martinez. In fact, Golovkin is a completely different animal to any fighter that Chavez would have faced. In retrospect, Golovkin has never fought someone like Chavez. Both like to fight. Both will come to fight. There is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that this fight will end in a knockout; a defining knockout that will make or break either of them.

Maidana V Mayweather: Assessing Maidana’s chances

mayweatherBy B.G.B: Straight to the point, it’s obvious that WBA welterweight champions Marcos Maidana (35, 31 KO’s) is a massive underdog going into the biggest fight of his life against pound for pound King Floyd Mayweather Jr (45-0, 26 KO’s) on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather has superior hand speed, footwork, accuracy, defense, height and reach. The only attribute Maidana can and will rely on is his superior power, but how far will power take him?
