Keith Thurman claims raw one-punch power offers the only realistic avenue to stop Sebastian Fundora, yet his own loss exposed the weakness of that approach. Fundora had him backpedaling from the opening bell, reducing him to full flight, defensive shelling, and wild, sporadic lunges instead of any organized attack.
That reality presents a massive hurdle for Jaron “Boots” Ennis if they meet in the ring. Carrying fight-ending power only solves part of the puzzle. Ennis must find a way to unleash that heat while navigating the endless jabs and relentless flurries that neutralized Thurman.
“Anybody who’s going to really beat Fundora, it’s best to have that one-punch ability,” Thurman said to Fighthype.
He questions whether anyone can easily outbox Fundora over twelve rounds. The towering southpaw brings relentless stamina, immense work rate, and superior reach, trapping rivals in defensive shells for long stretches.
“He’ll throw a five-punch combo, and then he’ll get back to his jab, and then where’s your offense?” Thurman noted.
Thurman lived that nightmare in the ring. For most of the bout, he retreated under heavy fire, absorbing punishment as Fundora dictated every exchange. The sporadic power shots Thurman threw did nothing to slow the onslaught. He could never plant his feet long enough to turn his power into a true equalizer. Thurman did not test Fundora’s chin; he did not test his gas tank, and he barely tested his guard.
Hunting strictly for one massive counter can backfire against someone with Fundora’s dimensions. A power puncher risks losing minutes off the clock, hoping for a lapse that never arrives while Fundora banks points behind his jab. One whiff on a counter, and the cycle of absorbing incoming combos starts right back up.
Thurman did spot a technical flaw, however. He noted that Fundora often drops his hands instead of returning them to his chin, even if his sheer length makes exploiting that lapse tricky.
Ennis has to explode across the pocket instantly, capitalizing on those defensive gaps before the jab resets. Thurman respects Boots’ lightning speed along with his lethal killer instinct, but connecting with that first clean bomb remains the ultimate test. Fundora smothered Thurman’s offense from distance, and Boots faces the heavy task of finding room where none existed before.
