Conah Walker will put his world title push on the line against Alexis Rocha in a WBA welterweight eliminator on December 5 at The Halls in Wolverhampton, Matchroom announced. DAZN will broadcast the fight worldwide.
Ranked No. 3 by the WBA, Walker returns home with five consecutive victories, four inside the distance. His tenth-round stoppage of Sam Eggington in May continued a run that includes wins over Pat McCormack, Liam Taylor, Harry Scarff and Lewis Ritson.
Rocha offers a different test for the Jamie Moore-trained contender. The American southpaw defeated former world champions Joseph Diaz and José Ramírez by unanimous decision in March and September, respectively. He arrives with recent wins that give Walker reason to be careful about charging into exchanges.
“I’m back headlining in Wolverhampton in front my people. They aren’t fans, they are friends and family, and I’ll give them another night to remember,” Walker said in Matchroom’s announcement. “From the first bell you know what I bring, and this fight won’t be any different. I want to do a right job on Rocha.”
Walker’s pressure is the attraction, but how he applies it could decide this fight. Coming forward gives Rocha a target. Walker needs to close the distance behind his punches and keep working once he gets inside, rather than leave the southpaw room to catch him approaching.
“I don’t know too much about Conah Walker yet, but I’ve watched some videos of him, and he looks like a strong fighter who likes to come forward,” Rocha said.
That assessment gets to the tactical question. Walker will have the crowd encouraging him to attack, while Rocha has an opportunity to use that eagerness against him. Sustained pressure could make the visitor uncomfortable; rushed attacks could give him cleaner punching opportunities.
Matchroom describes the bout as a WBA eliminator, without identifying it as a final eliminator or guaranteeing an immediate title shot. Walker has a chance to strengthen his claim at 147 pounds, but Rocha is pursuing the same opportunity and comes to Wolverhampton with momentum of his own.
