Jermall Charlo Suffers Camp Injury, Scratched from Fundora Undercard

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/07/2026 - Comments

Jermall Charlo hit another roadblock in his comeback effort after suffering a training injury, knocking him off the October 17 card where he was set to face Koen Mazoudier, per Mike Coppinger. At 36, the former two-division champ loses critical ground after sitting on the shelf for nearly 17 months.

Jose Resendiz steps in to replace Charlo in the 10-round contest on the Sebastian Fundora versus Ermal Hadribeaj undercard. Specifics on Charlo’s injury remain undisclosed, with no timeline offered for a rescheduled bout.

Charlo last appeared in May 2025, halting Thomas LaManna in six rounds. Prior to that outing, he topped Jose Benavidez Jr. in November 2023 following a 29-month layoff. Those represent his only two ring walks since outpointing Juan Macias Montiel back in June 2021.

That sporadic schedule leaves Charlo severely depleted of momentum as he tries carving out a campaign at 168 pounds. The Mazoudier pairing was designed to bank rounds, shake off rust, and set up a meaningful fight. That starting block is gone for now.

A pristine 34-0 record with 23 stoppages still provides promotional leverage, yet numbers on paper cannot reveal what remains of his prime form. Halting LaManna served a purpose, but letting another massive gap follow erased any genuine rhythm he had generated.

Pinning the physical setback on ring age or rust is pure guesswork since details remain scarce. The end result speaks for itself: another fight date evaporates while the clock keeps ticking on his career.

Sporadic showcase wins will not move the needle if every outing leads right back into hibernation. Charlo needs consistent rounds under the lights to prove he can handle upper-tier contenders and justify a major title shot. You simply cannot treat a boxing career like an occasional hobby and expect the human body to cooperate when you suddenly demand championship level intensity in camp.

When a 36-year-old fighter sits out for nearly 17 months after already logging only two fights in over five years, the connective tissue, joints, and muscular endurance are nowhere near adapted to the grind. Taking an aging fighter from zero to full throttle in a hard training camp is practically an invitation for a breakdown.

Mazoudier was lined up to jump-start that momentum. Instead, Resendiz gets the work on October 17, leaving Charlo stuck on the sidelines waiting to discover what he has left in the tank.
