Hearn Bets On A 49-Year-Old Floyd To Strip Ryan Garcia Of His Belt

Eddie Hearn picking Floyd Mayweather to defeat Ryan Garcia says far more about Garcia than Mayweather. A world titleholder at 147 pounds should never be vulnerable against a retiree closing in on 50, yet Hearn genuinely envisions Mayweather stepping off the couch to capture the strap.

“I think Floyd can beat Ryan Garcia. Maybe he’s just too old and maybe he can’t,” said Hearn last Saturday night at a press conference.

The logic assumes Floyd’s timing and defensive muscle memory can outsmart Ryan’s hand speed, even while Floyd’s reflexes and legs are knocking on fifty. That is Hearn basically declaring Ryan has no depth to his game beyond a fast left hook.

Hearn tried legitimizing the spectacle by calling it “almost like a welterweight George Foreman coming back.”

That parallel flatters the concept far too much. Foreman spent years rebuilding, stacking contenders and proving his durability before regaining heavyweight gold. A Mayweather return relies purely on nostalgia, cashing in on past greatness rather than recent proof.

The real problem is the financing of the Mayweather-Garcia fight. Domestic US promoters and traditional networks like DAZN or Amazon Prime Video cannot realistically underwrite this on pay-per-view receipts alone.

Mayweather will demand a guaranteed nine figures, and Garcia will want tens of millions. Traditional pay-per-view models are fractured, and no domestic promoter can guarantee a $150 million purse pot without bleeding cash.

The only entities capable of financing a spectacle of this scale are deep-pocketed sovereign wealth funds or a global streaming giant treating it as a loss leader. If Riyadh Season or a streaming player like Netflix decides the cultural noise is worth lighting tens of millions on fire, the checks clear overnight.

Outside of foreign state funding or a massive corporate subscription grab, traditional American boxing economics simply cannot absorb the guarantees.

Interestingly, Ryan doesn’t seem to care about the social media criticism he’s getting for pursuing a Mayweather fight. As long as millions of people tune in to complain about it, the negative perception simply feeds his bottom line.

If he knocks out an aging Mayweather, he takes credit for ending the most famous undefeated record in modern boxing history. If he loses, he lost to the consensus greatest fighter of this generation.
