Brandon Figueroa has his sights set on Rafael Espinoza for a featherweight unification, though he admits fans might need to wait through a few more title defenses first. The delay sounds less about finding willing rivals and more about cooking the commercial appeal until it hits a boil.
First, Figueroa has business to handle on Saturday when he puts his WBA belt on the line against Tomoki Kameda. Espinoza sits at the top of his wish list right after that, even if calling for the fight doesn’t mean it lands immediately.
“[Espinoza] is the No. 1 in our division,” Figueroa said to The Ring, describing their potential meeting as a fight-of-the-year candidate.
Figueroa called Espinoza the number one guy in the division, telling The Ring that a clash between them would easily contend for fight of the year.
You can see the appeal for an inside grinder who loves breaking opponents down. Espinoza brings towering height and relentless activity, meaning Figueroa would have to walk through heavy fire just to cut the distance and work. Neither man would ever have to go looking for action.
The frustrating part for fight fans is Figueroa’s belief that promoters will keep the titleholders on separate tracks to build their profiles. In his view, he might need one or two extra defenses before those unification bouts actually materialize.
The business logic makes sense on paper. Keep winning, build the brand, and give promoters bigger numbers to sell once the belts finally collide. Still, every unnecessary detour opens the door to an upset, a bad cut, or endless delays that wreck the whole plan.
Figueroa targeting Espinoza definitely gives fans something exciting to look past Kameda for. At the same time, it makes you wonder how much more buildup a fight really needs when both guys hold world titles and their ring styles already guarantee pure fireworks.
For now, this is just Figueroa reading the landscape rather than an official plan on the calendar. Nothing is signed with Espinoza. His only real job this weekend is taking care of Kameda; anything after that just determines how long everyone has to wait for the showdown he wants.
