Armando Resendiz Steps Into Jermall Charlo Vacancy Against Koen Mazoudier

Armando Resendiz faces a tricky rebuilding spot this weekend when he steps in against Koen Mazoudier. Coming off the loss of his WBA super middleweight belt to Jaime Munguia in May, Resendiz finds himself taking over a date originally booked as a tune-up for Jermall Charlo, positioned on a low-profile card that has struggled to grab fan attention.

Resendiz (16-3, 11 KOs) takes on Mazoudier (16-4-1, 6 KOs) over ten rounds on Saturday, October 17, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. An injury sidelined Charlo, creating an unexpected opening for the former champion on the Sebastian Fundora versus Ermal Hadribeaj undercard.

Mazoudier views the late swap as a genuine upgrade in credibility. In his eyes, taking down Resendiz carries far more weight than beating a faded name returning from another lengthy layoff.

“Beating Charlo would have come with excuses like, ‘He is old and inactive’, and all these different reasons why I’d beaten him,” Mazoudier told Fox Sports Australia.

Mazoudier makes a solid point for his own career, but the contrast is sharp for Resendiz. Dropping down from headline clashes against Caleb Plant and Munguia to face an opponent brought in to shake off Charlo’s ring rust represents a steep slide in stature. Resendiz went from pulling off a signature upset against Plant to dropping his belt, and now he is working to rebuild momentum on short notice.

The loss to Munguia stripped away plenty of momentum built from that Plant triumph. Munguia relied on steady footwork to keep Resendiz chasing throughout a flat contest, completely neutralizing the heavy pressure that troubled Plant. Resendiz fell back into the chasing pack without the kind of fire that sparks clamor for an immediate big money fight.

This matchup does not do much to alter that reality. Buzz around the event has remained quiet, with Fundora defending against Hadribeaj barely moving the needle. The Resendiz and Mazoudier clash sits even further below the radar.

A victory keeps Resendiz active, but handling Mazoudier will not instantly restore his top-tier status. He must look dominant, dictate the tempo, and deliver the kind of statement that forces people to pay attention again. Coasting to a decision over a fill-in opponent leaves him facing an uphill climb to secure elite competition down the road.
