Brandon Figueroa’s disastrous weekend has now cost Tomoki Kameda his chance to fight for the vacant WBA featherweight title. Their bout on tonight’s Sebastian Fundora–Ermal Hadribeaj card in Las Vegas has been canceled, according to Dan Rafael.
Figueroa reportedly became ill Friday night following the weight cut that had already cost him his belt. He came in at 127.4 pounds, missing the featherweight limit by 1.4 pounds and being stripped before entering the ring.
“Per source, tonight’s Figueroa vs. Kameda fight has been canceled after Figueroa became ill Friday night after his weight cut that caused him to miss weight and be stripped of the WBA featherweight title,” said Rafael on X.
For Kameda, the situation has gone from frustrating to considerably worse. After making weight, he remained eligible to win the vacant championship by beating Figueroa. Now he leaves without the opportunity to settle anything in the ring.
The Japanese former champion had already expressed his frustration Friday, pointing out that he had completed his own preparations and made the required weight. The cancellation means that work will produce no fight tonight. Whether he receives compensation or another title opportunity remains unconfirmed.
Figueroa’s preparations had also included a hamstring injury, which he disclosed to Chris Mannix. There is no confirmed diagnosis in Rafael’s report explaining the illness, and the injury should not automatically be treated as its cause.
Losing Figueroa removes one of the strongest action attractions from the Fundora–Hadribeaj undercard. His pressure and willingness to fight at close range had made the Kameda bout a significant part of the evening’s appeal.
The consequences extend beyond one canceled contest. Figueroa has lost the championship he won from Nick Ball in February, while Kameda’s route to the vacant belt is unresolved. The WBA must now determine what happens next.
A weekend intended to begin Figueroa’s title defense campaign has instead ended with him without a belt, without a fight, and with questions over when he can return.
