The 19-year-old British heavyweight overwhelmed Glen Williams with a second-round knockout to extend his fast-rising professional run in Carson

Leo Atang made an emphatic U.S. debut by stopping Glen Williams in the second round on Saturday night in Carson, California. The British heavyweight broke Williams down with heavy pressure before finishing the fight with a relentless attack along the ropes.

The 19-year-old British talent, now 8-0 (7 KOs), looked composed early before turning up the pressure in the second round. A crushing left hook hurt Williams and sent him stumbling backward into the ropes, opening the door for Atang to unleash a sustained attack.

Atang didn’t rush for a single knockout punch. Instead, he pinned Williams on the ropes and unloaded with a nonstop barrage of punches, giving him no chance to fire back. Williams absorbed a stream of unanswered punches as Atang repeatedly landed right hands with virtually no return fire.

Williams offered little resistance as Atang hammered him with clean right hands, leaving the referee with little choice but to intervene. The action was briefly halted after Williams’ mouthpiece came out, but his body language made it obvious he had no desire to continue. Moments later, the referee officially waved off the contest, giving Atang another early stoppage victory.

Williams had been competitive during portions of the opening round, but once Atang found the range with his power shots, the difference in class became increasingly obvious. The towering 6-foot-6 prospect showed patience before exploding with the kind of finishing sequence promoters want to see from a developing heavyweight.

The victory was an impressive U.S. debut for the York native, who is promoted by Eddie Hearn and co-managed by former world champion Sunny Edwards. Atang has now stopped seven of his eight professional opponents and continues to build momentum as one of Britain’s more intriguing young heavyweight prospects.

With another dominant knockout on his record, Atang has likely outgrown opponents at this level. The next stage of his development will be finding opponents capable of extending him into deeper rounds while still posing enough of a threat to answer questions that quick knockouts cannot.
