This past Saturday on the 17th of October, from The O2 Arena in London, England, in a championship rematch that was available live worldwide on DAZN PPV – reigning WBO heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois made an emphatic statement, stopping former titleholder Fabio Wardley in the 2nd round to successfully retain his championship.

The heavyweight division has been in total chaos ever since Oleksandr Usyk vacated his collection of alphabet belts, leaving the rest of the division battling for supremacy in a wide-open landscape. Entering the night, the big question was whether Wardley could make the necessary pacing adjustments after dropping Dubois twice early before being stopped in the 11th round of their first encounter five months ago. Instead, Dubois erased all doubt immediately and authored a destructive blowout.

Rather than another back-and-forth war of attrition, Dubois completely flipped the script from their first clash right out of the gate. In the opening seconds of round 1, Dubois caught Wardley flush with a booming shot that dropped the challenger hard to the canvas. Wardley beat the count, but he remained on unsteady legs for the rest of the frame. Staying cool, calm, and composed, Dubois patiently picked his spots and battered Wardley mercilessly before the bell.

Wardley came out for the 2nd round trying to establish his footing and survive the storm, but Dubois was completely dialed in. Stalking his hurt rival with authority, Dubois unleashed another heavy barrage of clubbing shots traps along the ropes, prompting Wardley’s corner to mercifully throw in the towel to save their fighter from further punishment.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner provides a full recap and post-fight review of Dubois’s dominant title defense, while exploring what could be next in the heavyweight division. This is Rummy’s Corner (written, narrated, and produced by Geoffrey Ciani).
