Schofield Sr. claims Team Schofield accepted the proposed purse and contract terms before Mason’s side withdrew from negotiations
Floyd Schofield Sr. says Abdullah Mason turned down two opportunities to fight Kid Austin Schofield despite Team Schofield accepting the proposed financial terms. The trainer claims his side agreed to every condition presented before negotiations broke down.
“We offered him to fight twice,” Schofield Sr. said to MillCity Boxing. “I spoke to J. Prince on the phone myself. He said, ‘Would you take a million dollars?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Well, you’re not going to get a million. You’re going to get $750,000.’ I said, ‘We’ll take it.’ They turned the fight down twice. So why are you offering me somebody who don’t want to fight us?”
Schofield Sr. maintained that his side accepted every condition that was presented.
“They sent the contract. We accepted all their terms and they ran with their tails. We accepted his terms and he ran. He don’t want to fight us. So why are we talking about Mason?” Schofield Sr. said.
He acknowledged Mason’s ability but rejected the idea that his son is avoiding the unbeaten contender.
“Abdullah is not a threat for us. Sorry. He’s a great fighter. He got a lot of skills and abilities. He’s not a threat for us. Him and my son would make a good fight. That’s why I offered it to him twice.”
With Mason apparently no longer part of their immediate plans, Schofield Sr. said Team Schofield is focused on pursuing the biggest available fights at lightweight, beginning with WBA champion Lucas Bahdi and other titleholders rather than revisiting negotiations that he believes have already gone nowhere.
