The former unified welterweight champion announced his retirement moments after a unanimous decision loss in Sydney, saying he leaves boxing healthy and financially secure.

Errol Spence Jr. announced his retirement immediately after losing to Tim Tszyu on Saturday night in Sydney. The former unified welterweight champion said his health, family and financial security made walking away from boxing an easy decision.

“It was a great fight. Congratulations to Tim and Jeff Fenech. It was a good showing by Tim. I answered a lot of questions about myself, and now it’s time to go home with my family and start a new life,” Spence said before confirming his decision. “Yeah, for sure. I’ve got my faculties intact. My money is good and working for itself, so everything’s good, man. I’ve got a beautiful family and I thank God that I’m able to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family by my side. Everything’s going to go well.”

The judges scored the fight 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110 for Tszyu, who gradually took control after a competitive opening. Spence was returning from a layoff of nearly three years and showed flashes of his former ability, but Tszyu’s pressure and higher punch output proved decisive over the second half of the contest.

At 36, Spence chose to leave the sport on his own terms rather than continue chasing another title opportunity. His remarks made it clear that preserving his health outweighed any desire to fight again.

Spence retires as one of the standout welterweights of his era after holding multiple world titles and defeating many of the division’s leading names. His final appearance ended in defeat, but he walked away satisfied that boxing had provided both financial security and the opportunity to leave with his long-term health intact.
