The veteran trainer says Tyson Fury should face an opponent who can provide resistance before a proposed clash with Joshua
Peter Fury believes Tyson Fury should face a meaningful challenge if he fights again before meeting Anthony Joshua. The veteran trainer said an easy opponent would offer little value and argued that Fury needs someone capable of lasting rounds and fighting back.
With some fans questioning whether Fury should have another fight before meeting Joshua, Peter Fury said there would be little value in a soft touch.
“Well, definitely somebody who is durable and can hit back, because a walk in the park is not achieving anything,” said Peter Fury to talkSPORT Boxing when discussing a possible interim opponent for Tyson.
“The only thing you get out of that is a ring walk and saying right, I need to get in the ring again, that’s it.”
Peter did not mention any specific names, but made it clear he believes any opponent should be capable of providing resistance and forcing Fury to stay sharp ahead of the Joshua fight.
The former heavyweight champion is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Makhmudov in his comeback bout and could return once more before facing Joshua.
Joshua is also preparing for a return to the ring. The two-time heavyweight champion is scheduled to face Kristian Prenga on July 25 as he looks to build momentum toward a potential showdown with Fury.
If Fury does decide to fight before then, Peter Fury’s view is straightforward: there is little point in taking on an opponent who offers no challenge.
“A walk in the park is not achieving anything,” Peter Fury said. “Definitely somebody who is durable and can hit back.”
