Former interim titleholders meet in Las Vegas co-main event on Fundora-Thurman card
Yoenis Tellez and Brian Mendoza will meet in a super welterweight fight on March 28 in Las Vegas, a matchup that places two fighters with recent setbacks on the same stage as they attempt to regain their footing in the 154-pound division. The bout has been positioned as the co-main event of the Prime Video pay-per-view card headlined by Sebastian Fundora defending his WBC title against Keith Thurman at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The meeting brings together two former interim titleholders whose recent runs have slowed after earlier breakthroughs. Tellez lost a 12-round decision to Abass Baraou last August, a defeat that interrupted the Cuban contender’s early surge toward the top of the division. He returned in December with a stoppage win over veteran Kendo Castaneda, but that bout functioned more as a rebuilding appearance than a decisive step toward another title opportunity.
Mendoza arrives in a similar position. The New Mexico native produced one of the biggest surprises of 2023 when he knocked out Sebastian Fundora to claim the WBC interim title, yet the momentum from that win did not carry forward. Mendoza dropped decisions to Tim Tszyu and Serhii Bohachuk before stopping Jesus Antonio Rojas last July, leaving him with one victory in his last three outings entering this matchup.
Both fighters acknowledged the importance of the opportunity in comments included with the fight announcement.
“I respect Brian Mendoza and everything he’s done, but on March 28 at MGM Grand, I’m coming hungry and ready to seize this opportunity,” Tellez said. “I’ve worked too hard to let this moment pass me by. I’m prepared to leave everything in the ring, because my goal is to get back to that world title fight.”
Mendoza echoed the urgency surrounding the fight.
“A win here turns everything around and puts me right back where I belong, with the best in the world at 154 pounds,” Mendoza said. “I’m hungrier than ever to get back to the top and ready to knock out whoever gets in my way, starting with Tellez.”
The matchup carries obvious stakes for both men as the super welterweight division continues to sort out its contenders around the championship picture. Each fighter has already shown flashes of top-level ability, but recent results have left questions about where they stand in the hierarchy.
For Tellez, the fight offers a chance to restore the momentum he built during his early rise, when a short-notice stoppage of Sergio Garcia and a decision over Julian Williams placed him firmly among the division’s emerging contenders. For Mendoza, it represents an opportunity to remind observers of the power and opportunism that once produced the dramatic knockout of Fundora.
Neither fighter can afford to lose or look poor if they want to remain part of the conversation at 154 pounds, which makes the March 28 bout less about hype and more about survival in a competitive division.
