The former welterweight champion says his next fight will take place in the junior middleweight division
Mario Barrios says his next fight will take place at 154 pounds. The former WBC welterweight champion confirmed the move after his loss to Ryan Garcia.
Barrios (29-3, 18 KOs) last fought on February 21, when Garcia outpointed him over twelve rounds to claim the WBC welterweight belt. Garcia scored a knockdown in the opening round and won widely on the scorecards, 119-108, 120-107, and 118-109.
The defeat ended Barrios’ brief run with the title and left his next move unclear in the immediate aftermath. During a Country Box event broadcast in Nashville, the 30-year-old explained that he plans to step away from the ring before beginning the next phase of his career at 154 pounds.
The move places Barrios in a division known for physical strength throughout the rankings. Established champions and contenders already compete there, including Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora, alongside younger fighters pushing their way toward title fights.
Barrios built his early run at 140 pounds before moving to welterweight in recent years. His time at 147 included wins over Yordenis Ugas and Fabian Maidana, results that helped him earn a title opportunity before the loss to Garcia.
Junior middleweight fighters tend to be naturally larger, with stronger inside work and heavier punches once exchanges begin. Barrios relies on steady workrate and combination punching, usually starting with the jab before letting his hands go in combination once opponents react.
Those habits can still translate at 154, but the division rewards fighters who can set their feet and punch with authority in close exchanges. The jab still starts everything, but opponents at this weight are comfortable firing back once the distance closes.
Barrios did not name an opponent or a return date. He confirmed only that the next fight will take place at 154 pounds after a period away from the ring.
The move puts him back in the contender mix in a crowded division where the title picture is already settled. Any path to a belt at 154 will require him to work through ranked opponents before another championship opportunity appears.
