Contender says narrow decisions will no longer define his fights

Sims Jr. says the kind of fights that have followed him for years are about to stop. Ahead of Saturday’s welterweight main event against Arnold Barboza Jr. at the Honda Center in Anaheim, the Chicago contender made it clear that he no longer plans to leave his performances in the hands of the judges.

Sims spoke plainly at Friday’s weigh-in, saying the next stage of his career will look different from the one that produced several tight decisions and disputed scorecards. The 32-year-old said he intends to remove the uncertainty that often surrounded his fights.

“Ain’t no more close fights and no more iffy decisions,” Sims said during the face-off interview. “We’re going to dominate every step of the way.”

The comment reflects a reality that has followed Sims (22-3-1, 8 KOs)

throughout much of his career. Even when he won, the margins often stayed narrow. Judges’ cards became part of the story too frequently, leaving little separation between victory and frustration. His loss to Oscar Duarte last August added another reminder that a technical approach alone does not always create distance on the scorecards.

Saturday’s bout with Barboza (32-1, 11 KOs) offers a different setting and a different division. Both fighters have moved up to welterweight after long runs at 140, and each enters the fight needing a strong performance to stay relevant in a crowded weight class.

Barboza, a former interim titleholder, also made weight comfortably at 146.2 pounds and spoke about how natural the new division feels. Fighting close to home in Southern California adds another layer for the veteran contender, who said returning to a big stage in front of local supporters carries special meaning after competing in major events abroad.

For Sims, the goal is simpler. The Chicago fighter said he wants his work in the ring to leave no doubt.

That promise will be tested immediately against a disciplined opponent known for his own methodical style. If Sims truly plans to eliminate the close fights that have defined parts of his career, Barboza represents the kind of opponent who will force him to prove it.
