Matchroom promoter points to opportunity ahead of WBC title fight on DAZN
Eddie Hearn says Austin Williams must deliver in his WBC middleweight title fight against Carlos Adames, which takes place Saturday on DAZN. The Matchroom promoter pointed to the opportunities already given as Williams steps into his first world title fight.
The shift in tone was clear when Matchroom promoter Hearn spoke about Williams’ position going into the fight. “He’s been given every opportunity,” Hearn said, before adding the line that is more important: “Now he has to deliver.”
Williams isn’t being talked about as a prospect anymore, which is understandable. He’s pushing 30 and has yet to beat a top-level fighter during his seven-year career. If you’re promoting a fighter like that, you want results. He’s had the backing of Matchroom/Hearn, but now he must deliver to justify their faith.
Hearn revealed how much has already been invested to get Williams to this point, including key opportunities on major cards and the decision to move him toward a world title fight rather than continue along a slower path. That explains why the tone has hardened. It’s about results now.
Adames is an established champion with experience at this level, and Hearn acknowledged as much, describing him as a “tremendous fighter” and noting the difficulty of the task. This fight requires Williams to prove he belongs right away.
There is also a practical side to the pressure. Williams is 29 and no longer in the early stages of a career where time can be spent adjusting and rebuilding. Opportunities like this don’t come around often, especially in a division with established names and limited title openings.
Adames will look to press forward, work behind his shots, and test Williams early, making this a demanding first title fight.
