Isaac Cruz wants the rematch with Gervonta Davis. With Davis unscheduled and facing uncertainty outside the ring, Cruz is positioning himself as the most immediate fight available at lightweight.
Gervonta Davis’ Uncertain Return Opens Door For Isaac Cruz
Cruz and his team are not waiting on sanctioning bodies or promotional maneuvering. They are pushing directly toward Davis, a former opponent who edged him in 2021 but never separated himself comfortably inside the ropes.
That first fight was fought at close quarters. Cruz cut the ring, worked behind short hooks, and forced Davis to fight in tight spaces rather than at his preferred range. Davis adjusted late, boxing off the back foot and picking counters, but he never dominated the exchanges. It was a competitive decision built on clean punching and ring generalship, not separation.
Now Cruz believes the timing favors him.
“Pitbull has been sitting back very patiently watching everybody get fights and get ready for the new year,” Sean Gibbons told BoxingScene. “He called me and has put together a little hit-list of three guys. At the top of the list is Gervonta Davis.”
The reasoning is practical as much as personal. Davis remains out on bail in Florida while facing legal issues, and he has not announced a return date following his disputed draw with Lamont Roach Jnr. The lightweight picture has slowed while contenders wait to see which direction he chooses.
Gibbons was direct about the opportunity.
“Gervonta beat him already; is backed in a corner; doesn’t want to fight Shakur or Roach,” Gibbons said. “He needs a guy who’ll bring him money.”
Cruz has kept himself ready. His stoppage of Rolando Romero in 2024 reinforced what he does best. He starts with the jab, closes distance, and works the body until exchanges break down into short combinations. He does not give ground easily. He forces opponents to throw under pressure and tests their gas tank over rounds.
At 140, where Cruz has recently campaigned, and at lightweight, where Davis built his name, the matchup remains viable. Cruz is not chasing a ranking. He is chasing a fight that makes sense in the ring and at the box office.
For Davis, the next assignment will show whether he intends to reassert himself through activity and performance. For Cruz, the message is already clear. He is ready to trade at mid-range again, and this time he believes the pace and pressure will tilt the scorecards in his favor.
