IBF tightens deadline on light heavyweight champion

Dmitry Bivol’s IBF mandatory defense against Michael Eifert is moving closer to a purse bid. The sanctioning body has rescheduled the hearing for Tuesday, narrowing the champion’s room to delay.

The IBF historically enforces its mandatories more rigidly than some other sanctioning bodies, making Tuesday’s deadline significant.

Negotiations can still produce a deal before Tuesday, but if the purse bid proceeds, the IBF will take control and assign the fight to the winning bidder.

Bivol inherited Eifert as his mandatory challenger after defeating Artur Beterbiev in their February 2025 rematch to reclaim supremacy at light heavyweight. That victory resolved unfinished business between the two, but it also activated IBF requirements that had been paused during the unification sequence and subsequent medical exception.

The IBF had already granted extensions to allow discussions to proceed without forcing immediate purse bid intervention. Those extensions did not produce an agreement, leaving the sanctioning body to advance the process rather than allow further delay.

Bivol has already relinquished one title during this period when he vacated the WBC belt rather than proceed with its ordered mandatory defense. The IBF process now presents a separate obligation tied specifically to its championship structure, independent of previous title decisions.

Eifert has held the IBF’s top contender position since his upset win over Jean Pascal and has remained in line while Bivol resolved unification and medical issues. His mandatory status gives him enforcement protection under IBF rules once procedural deadlines are reached.

The purse bid hearing establishes a defined endpoint for negotiations. If no agreement is reached beforehand, the IBF will assign promotional rights through the bidding process, removing the ability to extend talks further and forcing the fight toward execution.
