Callum Walsh boxed his way to a clear unanimous decision over Carlos Ocampo on Thursday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, closing Zuffa Boxing’s debut card on Paramount+. The scores read 98-90 twice and 97-91, keeping Walsh unbeaten at 16-0 (11 KOs) while Ocampo dropped to 38-4 (26 KOs).
Walsh won the fight with feet and discipline. From the opening bell, he controlled range, worked behind angles, and touched Ocampo before stepping out of return fire.
Walsh was the quicker fighter throughout. He picked up early rounds by boxing at distance and never allowed Ocampo to plant his feet. When Ocampo did reach mid-range, Walsh answered by circling off and re-establishing space.
Walsh stayed patient, never reaching or smothering his own work. Ocampo stayed busy, but his punches lacked timing and leverage at this weight. The pattern held through the middle rounds and never shifted.
The sixth round brought the only interruption. Walsh was ruled down after an awkward exchange that did not come from a clean shot upstairs. The referee scored it as a knockdown, giving Ocampo his best round on paper. Walsh adjusted immediately, tightened his guard, shortened his punches, and returned to straight shots on the move.
The later rounds mirrored the earlier ones. Walsh winning minutes. Ocampo absorbing shots without changing direction.
A professional night, limited answers
Walsh did what was required. He controlled distance, landed cleaner punches, and never let the fight turn. It was effective and controlled, but it left questions untouched. Against a fighter who can cut the ring, jab with him, and punch after slipping the left, this approach will be tested.
Elsewhere on the card, Misael Rodriguez Olivas (16-0, 8 KOs) stopped Austin Deanda on doctor’s advice before the fifth round after Deanda reported double vision. Rodriguez Olivas broke him down with uppercuts and short combinations.
At welterweight, Julian Rodriguez (24-2) handed Cain Sandoval his first loss with a wide decision, winning rounds with counters, timing, and body work.
Omar Trinidad (20-0-2, 14 KOs) stopped Max Ornelas (17-3-1, 6 KOs) in the tenth after a right shoulder injury, having already dropped him three times earlier.
Floyd Diaz (14-0, 3 KOs) outpointed Guillermo Gutierrez (13-3, 1 KO) over eight, pulling away late with heavier shots.
Emiliano Cardenas (10-0, 4 KOs) edged Marcus Harris (7-2, 5 KOs), Robert Meriwether III (10-0, 4 KOs) controlled Cesar Correa (5-1, 4 KOs), and Troy Nash (6-0-1, 1 KO) outboxed Jaycob Ramos (4-1, 1 KO) to open the show.
Walsh left clean. That is the upside. The next step will show whether control alone is enough when the opposition sharpens.
